Final Results

Kelli Murphy of Elgin, SC and Austin Morrison of Charlotte, NC battled cold temperatures, a wet golf course and tough competitors winning their respective divisions in the 7^th Carolinas Young Amateur on the Magnolia course at Pinewild CC in Pinehurst, NC.

Murphy, a freshman playing collegiate golf at Auburn, had to go extra holes to win the women’s division.  Murphy and Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, NC both finished tied with a 36 hole total of even par 144.  Brooks, a junior on the Elon golf team, missed two good chances for the win missing makeable birdie putts on the first two playoff holes, but it was Murphy who took advantage her opportunity and made a great birdie on the tough par three twelfth hole.  Defending champion Sarah Bae of Pinehurst, NC finished one shot out of the playoff at one over par 145.

In the men’s division, Austin Morrison of Charlotte, NC followed his first round 68 with a solid score of one under par 71 and a total of five under par 139.  “I think I should take some more time off.  I have played nine holes in the last five weeks, so I wasn’t really expecting to play this well, but everything just clicked” stated Morrison, a freshman who plays college golf for William and Mary.  Danny Pizetoski of Pinehurst, NC finished two shots back at three under par 141.

This annual championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association for amateur golfers who are 18 to 24 years of age and have finished high school.
