BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. -- First round stroke play qualifying results of the 43^rd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at The Windermere Club in Blythewood on Wednesday, June 17 (Par 35-36--71, 6661 yards, Course Rating: 72.3/135).

Blue skies with temperatures in 90s greeted players Wednesday morning on the par-71 layout. The sixth hole has been converted into a par-4 for the championship.

First round leaders Jarrett Grimes of Columbia and Jud Milam of Ridgeland have a two-stroke edge on the rest of the field competing for stroke play medalist honors. A total of 14 players broke par.

24-year-old Milam recorded four birdies, an eagle and a lone bogey to tie Grimes at five-under-par 66. A rising senior at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Milam mainly plays courses in the Lowcountry.

"I normally play on Bermuda greens, but I enjoy the bent grass [here at The Windermere Club]," Milam said. "What the break looks like is what it is." In his first appearance at this championship, he looks to make it to the weekend. "The goal is to make to it match play, today was a good start."

Growing up in nearby Columbia, 42-year-old Grimes is familiar with The Windermere Club. "I've played a lot of rounds here. It's a great course." Grimes has past success on bent grass. He won the 2009 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship on bent grass greens at Treyburn Country Club. "With no grain on the greens what you see is what you get." His confident putting led to seven birdies. A double-bogey on his 10th hole was his only blemish.

Alone in third place, 17-year-old Michael McKee of Ware Shoals mixed six birdies with three bogeys. A highlight came at the par-3 9th, where McKee's tee shot rattled the flagstick for a short birdie putt. McKee will attend Winthrop University this fall. Yesterday was his first look at the Pete Dye design. "It's pretty intimidating off the tee," McKee said. Recapping today's round, he liked The Windermere Club's bent grass greens. "I putted really well. The greens are so smooth. My mentality was to hit the middle of the green and try to make some putts."

Taylor White of Duncan made a triple-bogey on the par-3 9th to play the front nine six-over-par. Rather than giving up, the 19-year-old who plays out of River Falls Plantation Golf Club turned it around on the back-nine. Two eagles, three birdies, and no bogeys resulted in an impressive seven-under-par inward 29. White is T-6 at one-under-par 70.

On Thursday, the field of 77 players will complete the final 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the low 31 players plus the defending champion for match play. Defending champion Bradley Kauffman of Greer will be the number one seed. When this championship was last played at The Windermere Club in 1999, the cut-line fell at 150. The winner earns an exemption into the 101^st Carolinas Amateur Championship to be played July 9-12 at The Farm Course of Greensboro Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. 

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 17, 2015, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.
