Howell-Romero Lead 11th Cas Mixed Team

After the first round of four-ball stroke play, Valentina Romero of Greenville, S.C. & Bryce Howell of Blythewood, S.C. (R) hold a one stroke lead

PINEHURST, N.C. (August 20, 2016) -- First round results of the 11th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (No. 5) in Pinehurst, N.C. on Saturday, August 20th. (Par 36-36--72, various yardage)

Two Furman Paladins hold the lead after the four-ball portion of the 11th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship held on Course No. 5 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. Bryce Howell of Blythewood, S.C. is a rising senior and Valentina Romero of Greenville, S.C. graduated in May. The duo closed Saturday's opening round with three birdies. Howell, who finished T-10 at this year's Carolinas Amateur, chipped-in from the fringe on No. 16. Romero followed that by hitting her approach from 50 yards on 17 to within inches of the hole. Howell capped their round of six-under 66 by rolling in a 15-foot birdie on 18. "When your partner has the par, you could be aggressive," said Romero, who is playing in her first CGA championship.

Two teams are trailing Howell-Romero by one stroke. Rachel Wyatt and Jamie Phillips also ended their round with birdies to climb the leaderboard. Following a birdie on the par-5 17th, Phillips chipped-in for a walk-off birdie on the par-4 18th. The Charleston residents' round was highlighted with an eagle on the par-4 5th when Phillips holed his 9-iron approach from 148 yards. "We were burning edges most of the day. The birdie-birdie finish was huge," said Phillips. "We just have to go out there tomorrow and hit it closer," added Wyatt, who spent last summer as an intern for the Carolinas Golf Association.

Consecutive birdies on holes 10 thru 12 helped Scott Burnett of Matthews, N.C. and Stacey Wells of Mint Hill, N.C. also post five-under 67 to be tied for second with Wyatt-Phillips. At four-under 68, defending champions Aubrie Street of Greenville, S.C. and Michael Borton of Winston-Salem, N.C. trail the leaders by two strokes. Seven-time Carolinas Mixed Team champions Anthony Adams and Debbie Adams of Asheville, N.C. will have a three stroke deficit to overcome after posting three-under 69.

In the Senior Division, Jerry Sennett of Stanley, N.C. and Karen Sennett of Stanley, N.C. lead by one over Nick Avery of Goose Creek, S.C. and Christine Brooks of Ladson, S.C.

The final round will begin with a 9:00am shotgun. Teams will play modified alternate shot.

The championship format consists of one round of four-ball stroke play followed by a final round of modified alternate shot. Entry is open to any team comprised of a male amateur and a female amateur golfer who have reached their 13th birthdays, who are legal residents of North Carolina or South Carolina, are members in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
