Pike Pursues Carolinas Super Sr. 4-Peat


Arlis Pike Pursues Four Consecutive Titles

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (May 31, 2016) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 8th Carolinas Super Senior Championship at Jefferson Landing in Jefferson, N.C. on June 2-3.

In his first three years of eligibility for this championship, Arlis Pike, 68, of Kernersville, N.C. captured back-to-back-to-back titles. At last year's event held at the Country Club of Spartanburg, Pike secured a two shot win over Rick Luzar of Pinehurst, N.C. Pike looks to win his fourth consecutive Super Senior title this year at Jefferson Landing. 112 players are expected to compete in the 8th edition of the championship. Other notable contenders are:

  • Larry Boswell of Jamestown, N.C. A two-time winner of this championship, Boswell ranks third all-time with 15 CGA victories. Boswell has proved his longevity and consistency by winning CGA championships in five different decades.
    He was inducted in to the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.

  • Four-time CGA champion Ron Carpenter of Creedmoor, N.C.

  • 2015 North Carolina Super Senior champion Robert Desjardins of Matthews, N.C.

  • 2012 Super Senior champ John Walters of Charlotte, N.C.

  • 2011 NC Super Senior champ Mike Sprouts of Newton, N.C.

  • Five-time CGA champions Ernie Newton of Wallburg, N.C. and Jim Pridgen of Jamestown, N.C. Newton and Pridgen have teamed together to win four consecutive Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball titles.

This will be the first CGA championship hosted by Jefferson Landing. Designed by US Open and two-time PGA Champion, Larry Nelson, Jefferson Landing's award-winning course has a reputation of being challenging yet fair. Since its opening in 1991, the course is best known for its superb conditioning, outstanding playability for players of all levels, comprehensive practice facilities, and of course, its spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The championship is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 65th birthday by June 2, 2016, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 15.4.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 43 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 140 One-Day (net and gross) events and qualifying for USGA national championships. The CGA serves golf in the Carolinas with numerous programs such as: the USGA Handicap System; tournament management software and support; course measuring and course/slope ratings; agronomy consultation; answers about the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, and Handicapping; Carolinas Golf Magazine; Interclub series; Tarheel Youth Golf Association; Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame; expense assistance for USGA Junior and Girls' Junior qualifiers from the Carolinas; and the Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF). The CGF has distributed more than $1,500,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
