Virginias Leads Carolinas 14.5-9.5 After Day 1 at Captain's Putter Team Matches

LINVILLE, N.C.––Stoked by a dominating performance in afternoon four-ball matches,the Virginias team leads their Carolinas counterparts by a five-point margin (14½-9½) at the 68th Captain’s Putter Matches being conducted at Grandfather Golf and Country Club. Altogether, 24 golfers from the Virginias and the Carolinas are competing in the matches.

 

Carolinas claimed morning foursome matches by one point (6½-5½), before Virginias responded and won afternoon four-ball encounters by six points (9-3). Decisive in the outcome on the first day, Virginias went undefeated in four-ball action, claiming six matches while two others were halved. A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side. The event concludes with 24 final-day singles matches.

 

All told on day one, Virginias regulars outscored Carolinas by five points (10½-5½), while the senior contingents halved eight senior matches (4-4).

 

In morning foursomes, the two teams halved a combined four senior matches, while Carolinas owned the slight edge among the regulars, 4½-3½. For Carolinas’ regulars, Walter Todd Sr. (Laurens, S.C.)-Chris Mitchell (Prosperity, S.C.), Matthew Crenshaw (Burlington, N.C.)-Blair Bowland (Burlington, N.C.), Scott Harvey (Greensboro, N.C.)-Rob Simmons (Beaufort, S.C.) and Brian Westveer (Charlotte, N.C.)-J.D. Hoft (Bluffton, S.C.) each delivered wins.

 

On the seniors’ side for Virginias, Steve Fox (Huntington, W.Va.)-Harold Payne (Hurricane, W.Va.) knocked off two-time USGA Senior Amateur champion Paul Simson (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jim Pearson (Charlotte, N.C.). Also, after an early win by Virginias regulars Ben Beach (Glen Allen, Va.) and Matt Chandler (Hardy, Va.), the combinations of Vincent Nadeau (Gordonsville, Va.)-Scott Shingler (Haymarket, Va.) and Buck Brittain (Tazewell, Va.)-Justin Young (Roanoke, Va.) registered wins, while Philip Reale (Charleston, W.Va.)-Trent Roush (Mason, W.Va.) earned a halve to keep Virginias deficit at one point heading to the afternoon.

 

The two senior teams halved four-ball encounters after lunch. For Carolinas, Rick Cloninger (Fort Mill, S.C.) and Jim Grainger (Charlotte, N.C.) help contribute a team-best two points in the division with afternoon victories. Cloninger partnered with Russ Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.), while Grainger and fellow Charlotte resident David Strawn notched a victory. On the Virginias side, after the tandems were shut out in the morning, Pat Tallent (Vienna, Va.)-Billy Jahn (Virginia Beach, Va.) as well as Jack Allara (Salem, Va.)-Tom Grady (Marshall, Va.) responded to return wins in their four-ball matches.   

 

Virginias’ regulars controlled four-ball encounters, with Beach-Chandler, Nadeau-Shingler and Brittain-Young following their morning wins with victories in four-ball matches as each combination produced a team-leading two points for Virginias. Also recording victories for Virginias in the afternoon session were Wes Eklund (Charlottesville, Va.)-Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.), Keith Decker (Martinsville, Va.)-Jon Hurst (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Philip Reale (Charleston, W.Va.)-Trent Roush (Mason, W.Va.). Meanwhile, Jimmy Delp (Arlington, Va.)-Adam Horton (Chesapeake, Va.) and Pat Carter (Huntington, W.Va.)-Sam O’Dell (Hurricane, W.Va.) came away with halves.

 

Virginias will be vying for its third straight victory in 24 concluding singles matches on Saturday. Virginias needs nine and a half more points in order to reclaim the Captain’s Putter Trophy, while Carolinas needs 15 points for victory. The matches rotate annually between sites in the Virginias and Carolinas.
