Remembering Michael Dann

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- One year ago, on July 15, long-time employee Michael Dann passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. Michael worked for the CGA since January 1992 and was our course rating, handicapping, and magazine guru. Many of you got to know Michael over the years and would agree that he was a kind, upstanding, and friendly person. Michael also worked earlier in his career for the USGA and Golf World magazine. He was 65.

The CGA co-hosted a tournament honoring Michael Dann the day after Thanksgiving on Pinehurst No. 2. Proceeds benefited the Carolinas Golf Foundation and The Tufts Archives at Given Memorial Library in Pinehurst. An area within the CGA's new headquarters, Carolinas Golf House, will be named in his memory.

While Michael is gone, he will never be forgotten. The many people across the Carolinas he interacted with all remember him fondly. We think of him often. Each time we do, he still makes us smile and laugh, just like he did for years.

Peter DeYoung, a longtime friend and associate said "Michael knew everything in golf - tournaments, rules, course rating, media. But he didn't tell you he knew everything. Usually, the guy who knows everything will let you know that."

Michael Dann lived 65 years, but as friend Rich Rushforth said, "It's hard to believe he lived only 65 years. Many of us if we live to 100 won't experience as much as Michael did."

Our thoughts are with the Dann family.
