Salzer Seals the Deal at Jimmy Anderson

Salzer’s Steady Play Seals the Deal

Jacksonville, NC- Christian Salzer of Sumter, SC played steady golf this weekend shooting a pair of one over par, 73’s, to capture the 7th Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational hosted by Jacksonville Country Club in Jacksonville, NC.  Slazer, a junior in high school, started the day two shots behind  first round leader Davis Richards of China Grove, NC.  A first hole bogey seemed to settle the nerves as Salzer went on to   birdie holes 3, 5 and 7, for a two under par 34 on his outward nine.  Playing in the second to last group seemed to help, “I liked  not being in the last group and trying to come from behind,” said the victor.  Richards also played a strong front nine shooting 35  to help him maintain a one shot lead. After bogeys on 11 and 12, Salzer was at risk of shooting himself out of the tournament, “I  just tried to hit fairways and greens, my putter was dead on the back nine but I tried to grind it out and I’ll take two putts out here on these greens,” added the 2016 North Carolina State verbal commit. The consistent play proved to be enough as Salzer finished one shot ahead of Richards to claim the title.

The final nine did not go quite as planned for Richards, who will be playing collegiately for the Wolfpack of NC State this fall, as he stumbled down the stretch. The senior from South Rowan High finished second for the second year in a row out. Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury, NC and Carson Ownbey of Candler, NC finished tied for third, just two shots behind the winner. Ownbey won the 13-15 year old division beating out A.J. Beechler of Pinehurst, NC, Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, NC and Dalton Mauldin of Sanford, NC by a single stroke.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend its gratitude to the members of Jacksonville Country Club for their continued support of junior golf in the Carolinas. An extra special thanks to head golf professional, Holden Abrams, as well as head golf course superintendent, David Cumbo and their staffs for making the event a success. The Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational is an annual event conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
