Crowded Carolinas Jr Leaderboard for Final Rd

The youngest player in the field, Abhay Gupta, 13, holds a share of 36-hole lead at Carolinas Junior

CONCORD, N.C. (July 26, 2017) -- Second round results of the Carolinas Golf Association's 68th Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship at Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, N.C. on Wednesday, July 26th (6984 yards, par 36-36--72).

Entering Thursday's final round of the 68th Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship, the youngest player in the field, Concord local Abhay Gupta, has a share of the lead. At 13 years and one month old, Gupta put together rounds of 68-71 for a two-day total of five-under-par. Playing on a familiar Cabarrus Country Club layout through 36 holes, the young Gupta has made just three bogeys, which he offset with eight birdies.

Tied with Gupta atop a crowded leaderboard is 16-year-old Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, N.C. Last August, Smith captured his first CGA title at the Dogwood State Junior Boys' Championship, also held at Cabarrus Country Club. Smith won with a three-day total of seven-under-par. At the same tournament, Gupta, then 12-years-old, finished T60 at 17-over after 54 holes.

On Wednesday, Smith credited his wedge play to his three-under 69. While playing two of Cabarrus CC's short par-4s, Nos. 6 and 10, Smith placed his wedge approaches within three feet of the cup for birdies. Keeping his tee shots on the short grass allowed Smith to attack the flag, "That's the toughest part of this course," stated Smith, who has verbally committed to Wake Forest University. "On the short par-4s it's important to hit the fairway because the rough is so penal." The rising high school junior also demonstrated fine wedge play to convert up and down birdies on the par-5 8th and 11th holes.

First round leader, Stephen Carroll of Concord, N.C. rebounded after a double bogey, bogey start to post two-over 74. He is tied for second, one shot back of the leaders. "I can't be upset with how I played after that start," said Carroll, who will play for East Carolina University in the fall. "One-under after the third hole is alright with me."

2015 North Carolina Junior Boys' champion Jack Massei, 18, of Cary, N.C. and Michael Sanders, 17, of Davidson, N.C. are tied for second with Carroll at four-under-par 140.

Fourteen players are within three shots of the leaders. Wednesday's lowest round of four-under 68 was shot by Lansdon Robbins of Davidson, N.C. and Zane Sullivan of Charlotte, N.C.

The Carolinas Junior Boys' championship format is 54-holes of stroke play. The field was reduced from 142 to the low 70 players and ties after 36 holes. 76 players made the cut at 7-over-par 151 to advance into Thursday's final 18 holes. The lead group of Gupta, Smith, and Sanders will tee off the first hole at 9:18 a.m.

Scoring of the final round will be provided by the CGA at various scoring stations. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter, @CarolinasJunior. Continue to visit the CGA website throughout this championship and all year long for complete championship coverage including scores, interviews, photos, and recaps.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by July 27, 2017, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.
