Bryce Hendrix Earns Top Seed at NC Match Play

Bryce Hendrix of Raleigh took stroke play medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 7-under-par

DURHAM, N.C. (August 3, 2017) -- Stroke play qualifying results from the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C. on Thursday, August 3rd (7,049 yards, par 36-36--72).

Bryce Hendrix of Raleigh earned stroke play medalist honors and the number one seed for match play in the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham.

Hendrix, 20, used seven birdies to post his second consecutive round in the 60s. Four birdies in a row on holes 9 through 12 propelled the rising junior at UNC-Greensboro to a four-under 68. His two-day total of 7-under-par 137 took medalist honors by one stroke.

"I didn't hit the ball that well off the tee today," said Hendrix. "I just made a lot of good putts." On the par-5 9th and 11th holes, Hendrix demonstrated both his length - getting greenside in two shots - and his fine wedge play, to make up-and-down birdies. On the short par-4 10th, a wedge approach from 109 yards to 10 feet setup another birdie. Then a knockdown 6-iron from 186 yards to 8 feet on No. 12 capped his birdie barrage. "All in all, it was a good two days," Hendrix added with a smile.

Both Harrison Rhoades of Raleigh and Eric Bae of Pinehurst played bogey-free golf Thursday to finish stroke play qualifying tied for second place. A rising junior at N.C. State, Rhoades added a two-under 70 to match his opening round 68. A few key par saves early in Rhoades' round kept his momentum. "I played pretty solid all day," said the 20-year-old. "I really didn't make any mistakes." Bae, a 19-year-old rising sophomore at Wake Forest University, recorded four birdies on his blemish-free scorecard. Tied at 6-under-par 138, Rhoades received the No. 2 seed for match play through a blind draw. This method is used to break all qualifying score ties - other than seeds determined in a playoff - for match play seeding.

The 36-hole cut line fell at +2 (146) for the low 32 players to advance into match play. An 11-for-5 playoff was needed to determine the final match play competitors. After four playoff holes, play was suspended due to darkness. Tim Bunten of Concord and Zack Swanson of Waxhaw will playoff Friday morning for the 32nd seed. Players advancing to match play are exempt into the 2018 North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.

At 4:00 p.m., play was suspended for 75 minutes due to dangerous weather in the area.

The 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for match play. After Thursday's second round of stroke play qualifying, the field was cut to the low 32 players. Match play consists of two rounds of matches completed on both Friday and Saturday, then an 18-hole final on Sunday morning.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering hole-by-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909.
