Pinehurst CC Completes CGA Interclub Trifecta

Pinehurst CC captured the Carolinas Interclub title by a 22-14 margin over Pine Island CC

WEST END, N.C. (November 19, 2017) –  The final two teams battled under a clear blue sky as winds whipped across the contoured fairways of Dormie Club in West End, N.C. (Par 35-36--71, 6303 Yards) From over 70 teams who began the 20th Carolinas Interclub season, Pinehurst Country Club of Pinehurst, N.C. and Pine Island Country Club of Charlotte, N.C. competed for the title Sunday. The format of the Carolinas Interclub is a 12 player team competition with four-ball match play formats in each match. Each match has a 6 point total; 2 points for the front nine, 2 points for the back nine and 2 points for the total.

In Pinehurst CC's semi-final match Saturday, Matt Nunez sank a 5-foot par putt on the 18th hole to secure a 19-17 victory over Umstead Pines. Nunez continued to make a difference for Pinehurst in Sunday's final. Playing in the anchor match, Nunez went 4-under-par in a three-hole stretch on holes 4-6 to help claim four points. The Pinehurst teams of Joe Picaro/Randy Muir and David Jensen/Brian Gellman both tallied all six points available in their matches. A 22-14 margin of victory earned Pinehurst the Ben Payne trophy. Captain Dave Hampton said the team was thrilled to appear in the final four for the second time in three years and was proud to join the other Pinehurst teams as CGA Interclub champions. Pinehurst Country Club completes the CGA Interclub trifecta: winning the Senior Interclub, Women’s Club Team, & Regular Interclub titles in 2017.

During the regular season, Pinehurst Country Club went 3-3 in their four-team pod. In the playoffs, the team rattled off wins against the Club at 12 Oaks, Macgregor Downs Country Club, and Wildwood Green Golf Club to advance to this weekend's final four.

The Carolinas Golf Association thanks the Dormie Club for their hospitality hosting the 20th Carolinas Interclub Final Four. Players raved about the course layout and conditions.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
