Simson Seeks Back-to-Back Super Senior Titles

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (May 7, 2018) -- One hundred thirty-two players will compete in the Carolinas Golf Association's (CGA) 10th Carolinas Super Senior Championship at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. on May 9-10, 2018. This will be the twelfth CGA championship held at the club. The North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will be played at the club this summer, August 1-5.

The Carolinas Super Senior crowns the best player in the Carolinas age 65 and over. This championship is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®. Players may sign up for the 65+ or 70+ age division.

In last year's championship, Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. edged Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, N.C. by a single shot at Fort Mill Golf Club. Simson grabbed the Carolinas Super Senior victory in his first year of eligibility. Garrett Garland of Huntersville, NC won the 70+ division by four shots over Mark Weiner of Kiawah Island, SC.

 

Players to Watch:

  • Defending champion Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. The most decorated golfer in CGA history, Simson now holds 33 all-time titles.
  • 2016 champion Raymond Davisof Apex, N.C.
  • Arlis Pike of Kernersville, N.C. won this championship three consecutive years before Davis ended that streak.
  • Ron Carpenter of Creedmoor, N.C. is a five-time CGA champion. Carpenter won the North Carolina Super Senior in 2014.
  • Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, N.C. has claimed six CGA championships. Perry finished runner-up to Simson in 2017.

Eligibility:
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 65th birthday, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA), and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® that does not exceed 15.4 at a CGA member club.

Competition Schedule:
Wednesday, May 9
Round 1 – 18 holes stroke play

Thursday, May 10
Round 2 – 18 holes stroke play
Lunch and awards immediately following play for players

 

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
