Spicer, Sudjianto Lead After Round One of the Carolinas Women's Am

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 19, 2019) -- First round results of the 93rd Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday, June 19, 2019.

Two are tied at the top after round one of the 93^rd Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship. Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C. and Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. fired first round scores of 1-under-par, 71 at Ballantyne Country Club to finish the day in a tie for first.

Spicer’s round got off to a strong start with two birdies on her first two holes.

“It really helped that I got off to a good start,” said Spicer. “That was a good way to build momentum and I just kind of stayed steady from there.”

Spicer had a busy scorecard making four bogeys and five birdies in round one.

Sudjianto carded one birdie and eight pars in her opening nine. She made bogeys on Nos. 13 and 16, but made a bounce back birdie on No. 17 and finished the round strong back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.

“Today I was a little nervous just because I was playing with girls that were a bit older than me and had already started college,” said Sudjianto. “I just tried to stick to my game plan and be confident in myself and know that I belong here too.”

Riley Smyth of Cary, N.C., had the solo lead at 2-under-par late in her round on Wednesday, but made two bogeys on No. 16 and 18 to shoot an even par, 72. Anna Parramore of Greenwood, S.C. is the only other player in the Championship Division field to shoot even par or better. Parramore carded an even par, 72.

Two-time champion, Katie Kirk of Winterville, N.C. (2014 & 2015) shot 4-over-par, 76 in the first round of the championship.

In the Carolinas Division Jayne Pardus of Mount Pleasant, S.C. shot a first round score of 4-under-par, 68 that included an eagle on the par-5, 11^th hole. Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. sits in second place after a first round score of 2-under-par, 70.

The Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship was inherited by the Carolinas Golf Association from the Carolinas Women's Golf Association in 2013. The championship began in 1922 and annually crowns the women's amateur champion of the Carolinas.

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and Carolinas division (shorter course).

This competition includes gross scores only for the Championship division and gross and net scores for the Carolinas division. Players in the championship division are flighted using 36-hole scores. Players in the Carolinas division are pre-flighted within their division by Handicap Index®.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®.
