Perfection looks to be knocking on the door for Peter Fountain of Raleigh, N.C. who seems destined for success. Fountain opened his Round of 16 match in full confidence with seven birdies in the fourteen holes defeating Austin Alexander of Rutherfordton, N.C.

In Fountain’s defense, the afternoon “cooled off” a little. Peter took an early lead in his quarterfinal match against Christopher Sperrazza of Raleigh, N.C. A few mistakes came his way as he found some trouble on No. 12 but Fountain did not let it stop his determination.

“I kinda got tripped up on the 12th hole,” said Fountain. “I tried to punch out and hit a tree and had to concede the hole so I kinda lost some momentum there. Then on number 15, I ended up making a five foot putt for par which gave me a lot of confidence and made me go dormie.”

Symon Balbin of Pinehurst, N.C. fought hard this afternoon, winning his match in extra holes to advance to the semifinals. Balbin turned things up a notch as he drove the green and finished with a two putt for birdie.

“It was so much fun,” said Balbin. “Honestly, as the day went on, I got a better hold of everything else and my swing kinda came together towards the end and managed to birdie the last hole”.

Balbin is filled with adrenaline and is excited going into tomorrow’s semifinal match with high-school competitor, Fountain.

Alex Heffner of Harrisburg, N.C. defeated Zach Roberts of Holly Springs, N.C., 3 and 2. Heffner was one up through nine holes. Heffner’s final push on the 15th hole was his phenomenal approach shot with a long iron to eight feet and finally drained the putt for eagle.

Six seed Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. defeated Nicholas Matthews of Mebane, N.C. 3 and 2. Hudson came from behind to win his first five holes on the back nine after making the turn two down.

Semifinal matches begin Friday morning at 8 a.m. and the final match will begin in the afternoon to determine who will be crowned the 52nd N.C. Junior Boys’ champion.

Championship format is match play with 18 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the top 64 players on Tuesday, June 25. Once a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 8-18 as of June 28, 2019, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
