Riley Earns Medalist Honors at NC Match Play

Quinn Riley shot 9-under-par to claim medalist honors at the 2019 NC Match Play Championship at Catawba Country Club.

NEWTON, N.C. (August 1, 2019) -- Round two stroke play qualifying results of the 10th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Catawba Country Club in Newton, N.C. on Thursday, August 1, 2019. (6635 yards, Par 35-35--70)

Things appears to be coming together for Quinn Riley of Raleigh, N.C. as he shoots 9-under-par, 131 total to finish as the stroke play medalist at the N.C. Amateur Match Play Championship at Catawba Country Club in Newton, N.C.

“I played in the U.S. Am qualifying and my game felt good but I couldn't get anything going on the greens,” said Riley. “I wouldn't say it all came together this week but the driver is here this week and I'm back to my old trusty putter so everything that should be there, is there.”

Riley has experience playing and winning in match play formats. He was the 2017 N.C. Junior Amateur champion which is a similar format to this event. As the medalist, Riley claims the No. 2 seed heading into the match play Round of 32.

“I know anything can happen,” said Riley. “I don't have a whole lot of expectations going into match play. Around this golf course you can make a lot of birdies and go way up on someone very early. But with my length, it's a pretty big advantage to have wedges into basically every hole. I don't know what to expect but being the second seed I should have a smooth path into the Round of 16.”

The defending champion, Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. is automatically seeded No. 1 for match play. Despite having the top seed locked up, Einstein still played during the stroke play portion and has a lot of confidence heading into match play.

“I just got back from the Southern Amateur a week and a half ago where I played really well,” Einstein said. “Before that I was struggling a bit to find my game, so that was a really big confidence booster leading up to this.”

Einstein said he played well during the stroke play portion of the event in what was essentially practice rounds given his automatic seeding. However, his approach to the match play portion of the championship is going to be much different than Riley’s.

“I really like the course and it’s been good getting out to play,” Einstein said. “There are a few spots where I'll get aggressive but mainly I’ll play conservative for the match play.”

Walker Cress of Concord, N.C. will claim the No. 3 seed heading into match play after shooting 7-under-par, 133 total for the two rounds of stroke play.

The field was cut to the top 31 scores after a six-for-five playoff. Players are seeded based on their stroke play performance and the round of 32 and 16 matches will be held Friday, August 2. The quarterfinal and semifinal will be held on Saturday, August 3. The final championship match will be held on Sunday, August 4.
