There are no guarantees in golf, especially when it comes to match play. After the first two rounds of match play at the N.C. Amateur Match Play Championship, the lowest seeded player left is the No. 8 seed, Brad Magnum of Iron Station, N.C.

The No. 18 seed, Ben Woodruff of Huntersville, N.C., handily defeated the stroke play medalist and No. 2 seed, Quinn Riley of Raleigh, N.C., 7 and 6 in the Round of 16.

“The day ended a little earlier than I thought it would but that's never a bad thing,” said Woodruff. “I think my good is really good and when I’m hitting the ball really well, I'm hard to beat. On top of that, I was able to make a couple putts so it was really a bonus to have that going for me in the first two matches today.”

Woodruff fired a 5-under-par, 30 on the front nine of his Round of 16 match to make the turn 5 up over Riley.

“I've grown up playing with Quinn and I know how good of a player he is so I knew I had to bring my best golf today to come out on top,” said Woodruff. “I made a 15 foot birdie putt on No. 7 to go 4 up and I kind of knew at that point that I was really in control and need to put my pedal down.”

Woodruff went on to win No. 10 to go 6 up and he closed out the match with a two-putt par on No. 12.

Host club crowds were out in full force today following the three Catawba Country Club members that made it to the match play portion of the championship. Joe Kastelic of Hickory, N.C. is the lone Catawba Country Club member carrying the torch for the host club into the Quarterfinals.

“It was nice to have everyone out there watching,” said Kastelic. “A lot of the club events, people come out to watch so I'm probably more use to it than other people so I see it as an advantage.”

Kastelic found himself behind for more than half of his Round of 16 match against Walker Simas of Charlotte, N.C. but was never more than two holes down in the match. He took a 1 up lead on No. 16 and held on to that lead through the end to move on to the quarterfinals.

“I’ve gotten some good breaks and I made a lot of putts in three days,” said Kastelic. “It's a huge advantage to know where you can miss it. I doubt I could play like this anywhere else and have a chance, but it helps to know where to miss it and know the greens.”

Only eight players now remain at the N.C. Amateur match Play Championship. The quarterfinal and semifinal will be held on Saturday, August 3. The final championship match will be held on Sunday, August 4.
