They’ve done it again! Don Detweiler and Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. successfully defend their title at the Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship. The win marks the third CGA four-ball championship title for the team this year and their ninth all-time.

“It exceeded expectations,”  said Detweiler about the year. “To win a CGA championship is really hard to do. There are a lot of really good players that come ready to play. It's a significant achievement and I'm really proud of it.”

The duo began the day with a three-shot lead over their nearest competitors after an opening round of 63. They took it a step further in the final round firing a 9-under-par, 62 to win the Championship by ten shots. Together they combined for 16 birdies, one eagle and only one bogey to finish at 17-under-par, 125 total.

“We partnered extremely well this week,” said Simson. “None of the birdies we had were on the same hole. We seem to be able to partner very well in these things. When one is in trouble, the other steps up. This week was a great example of that.”

Two teams finished tied for second place at 7-under-par, 135 total for the championship. The 2016 Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball champion, Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, N.C. and his partner Gary Hull of Statesville, N.C. along with Brad Burris of High Point, N.C. and Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem, N.C. tied for second place in the Championship Division.

Ernie Newton and Larry Boswell Win the 70+ Division

In the 70+ Division, Ernie Newton of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Larry Boswell of High Point, N.C., were also able to defend their title. The duo shot 5-under-par, 66 in the final round to finish at 12-under-par, 130 total for the Championship. Three teams finished tied for second place at 5-under-par, 137 total.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the club members and staff of the Country Club at Wakefield Plantation for hosting the 8th Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship. A special thank you to General Manager, Michael Thomas, Head Professional, Adam McLaughlin and Head Superintendent Todd Lawrence.

The championship is contested at 36 holes of four-ball stroke play (Gross scores only). A tie for the Championship Division or 70+ division is decided by an on-course playoff. Teams select the division in which to compete if eligible.
