Walker Cress of Concord, N.C. took the round one lead at the 60th North Carolina Amateur Championship with a 6-under-par, 64.

Cress, a senior player for James Madison University’s golf team, was in the first group off the tee this morning. He had a strong start with three birdies in a row on Nos. 2, No. 3 and No. 4.

“I made a lot of putts. I was hitting the ball pretty well and just had fun out there. I really enjoyed the guys I was playing with so that made it even more fun,” Cress said.

Cress said that his putting was the strong point of his game today and once he made a long one on No. 9, they continued to roll in after that.

“I got off to a steady start and made a long putt on No. 9 and picked up speed from there,” Cress said.

As for his gameplan, he plans on doing the exact same thing he did today.
