Hargett Paces The Field After Two Rounds

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (September 14, 2021) -- The Carolinas Golf Association conducted the second round of the 60th Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. on September 14, 2021. The field competed at 6,688 yards (par 36-36--72).

Continuing his steady play and staying out ahead of the pack, Eddie Hargett of Blythewood, S.C. cruised to a solid even-par, 72 in his second round to stay at 6-under-par heading into the final round.

“My mentality isn’t going to change,” said Hargett. “Every hole I’m just gonna take it a shot at a time. I hit plenty of greens today, maybe 15. I just couldn’t get anything going on the greens today so that’s something I’ll need to do. Just see the lines and hit the putts.”

Starting off the tenth tee today, Hargett got off to a strong start with birdies on holes 12 and 16 to make his turn in 2-under-par. Another birdie at the fifth hole had him firmly in control moving forward, before a disappointing finish over his final four holes.

“Us old guys do this a lot,” said Hargett. “It’s just about relaxing and conserving energy and coming out to do it again. It’s about competing when we’re out here but it’s camaraderie after the fact.”

Hargett will be sure to try to replicate the ball striking performance he had today, after collecting 15 of 18 greens in regulation.

“I hit my irons really good,” said Hargett. “I hit it ten feet a lot today, Maybe they’ll all go in tomorrow.”

Just off the pace and in second all alone is Rich Weston of Pawleys Island, S.C. Weston is sitting at 4-under-par total for the Championship, after a second round 1-under-par, 71.

Weston started his second round with considerable pace, birdieing his first four holes. In total he rolled in five birdies on his outward nine to make the turn in 4-under-par for the day. While it wasn’t a back nine that he wanted with three bogeys and six pars, Weston is firmly in contention in his attempt at winning his first ever Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship going into the final round.

Joe Jaspers of Huntersville, N.C. continues to hang around as well towards the top of the leaderboard, as he sits at 2-under-par for the Championship in solo third.

Rounding out the top five, and in a five way tie for fourth place are Robert Shoaf of Concord, N.C., Larry Cloninger of Gastonia, N.C., James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C., Stan Sill of Spartanburg, S.C., and Allen Peake of Cashiers, N.C. All five competitors sit at Even Par for the Championship.
