Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. took a dominant seven-stroke lead in the opening round and was able to carry that momentum into the final round to ultimately capture the 18th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship with a 2-over-par, 144 overall finish.

Kuehn attributes her incredible opening round of 2-under-par, 69, the only round under par in the championship, to her strong wedge game. She was able to hit it close on the greens and drop the putts when the time came. Her final round included more of the same: fairways and greens.

The Wake Forest Sports Hall of Famer had a solid margin over the field at the start of the round. She just needed to play it safe and capitalize on her birdie looks when she had the opportunity to hold onto that lead.

Kuehn did just that with a birdie on No. 8 to make the turn at 2-over-par, 37. Then on the back-nine, the pressure started to set in as she bogeyed Nos. 12, 13 and 14, while Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown, N.C. started to close the gap with a birdie on No. 10.

“I had three bogeys in a row on the back and to stop the bleeding I had to make an up-and-down on the par-3, No. 16,” said Kuehn. “I was in the bunker which was tough, but was able to get up-and-down so that felt really good and got the momentum back up.”

From there, Kuehn birdied No. 17 and rolled in with a par on No. 18 to claim her first senior CGA championship title. “I haven’t played much competitive golf recently,” said Kuehn. “I had a parenthesis in my life while I was raising my kids, which I loved. Honestly, yesterday I was more focused on Rachel and Taylor playing than I was myself. But I missed the competition, so it is great to be back.”

Kuehn is an 8-time CGA Champion including two Carolinas Women’s Amateur wins in 1998 and 2001. Her 2001 Carolinas Women’s Amateur win was her last CGA title until, of course, her incredible victory today at the North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur.

Kuehn remarked, “I had no idea that I would still be competitive after 20 years without competing. It is nice to feel the butterflies again and it is so rewarding when you hit a great shot in a competition, so I am very happy to be back at it.”

Yang earned runner-up at 7-over-par, 149 overall and carded the lowest round of the day today at 1-over,par, 73. Birdies on Nos. 4 and 10 helped her to secure second place, which is her best finish yet in this event. Twenty-two-time CGA Champion, Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. and Judy Penman of Pinehurst, N.C. tied for third at 12-over-par, 154 overall.

Kelly Whitley of Greensboro, N.C. captured the Carolinas Division with an 8-over-par, 150 finish. Notably, Whitley carded two birdies in her final round today on Nos. 3 and 6 to help climb her way atop the leaderboard. June Lee of Durham, N.C. finished just one stroke shy of Whitley’s lead at 9-over-par, 151 overall to claim runner-up. Close friends and members at Lonnie Poole Golf Club, Christine Merrill of Raleigh, N.C. and Julie Shore of Raleigh, N.C. tied for third at 14-over-par, 156 and also share the esteemed honor of low super senior.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at Alamance Country Club, especially Director of Golf Drake Woodside, for graciously hosting the 18th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
