STATESVILLE, N.C. – The 19th Carolinas Pro-Junior Tournament saw 42 pairs of golf professionals and junior golfers compete for glory at Statesville Country Club in Statesville, N.C. After 18 holes and a riveting four-hole playoff, Emerson Dever of Durham, N.C. and Robert Linville of Charlotte, N.C., were crowned champions.
The championship was played in the Pinehurst Foursomes format. Both players on each team hit a tee shot, and then each player took their next stroke on their teammate’s ball. After that, one player’s ball was chosen, and the team alternated shots until holed.
Dever and Linville started hot with a birdie on the first hole, and followed it up with birdies on both par-5’s in their first nine holes. The duo recorded three more birdies in their second nine, including back-to-back on Nos. 14 and 15 to shoot 66.
Gabriel Ansley of Anchor Lodge, N.C. and Coltin Scott of Clayton, N.C. recorded the best score on the front nine by shooting 31, and a birdie on No. 15 brought them to six-under par and forced a playoff at 66.
No. 18 was the playoff hole, which was a 398-yard par-4 from the back tees, with a dogleg right and a tight fairway. On the first attempt, both groups struggled to find the fairway, and each group got up and down for par. On the second attempt, Ansley and Scott had a chance for birdie, but did not convert the short putt. The third time playing the hole had the same result as the first, and the playoff moved to No. 10.
On No. 10, both Ansley and Scott missed the green on their second shot, and Dever’s shot found the middle of the green. Ansley and Scott couldn’t get up and down, and Linville and Dever converted the two-putt par to win the title.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the staff at Statesville Country Club for their hospitality, including Director of Golf Andy Zachowicz and Event and Communications Coordinator Jalyne Hanson, as well as the greenkeeping and pro shop staff.
