INMAN, S.C.- Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C. and Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. claimed the Carolinas Senior Women’s and Super Senior Women’s titles at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.
In a homecoming of epic proportions, Woodard went on a hot streak in her final nine holes to capture the 27th Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and the Patty Moore trophy.
Just two days after her major victory at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, Woodard again found herself near the top of a leaderboard. She shot 71 to go 1-under par and sat just one stroke behind the leaders Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. and Judy Penman of Pinehurst, N.C.
“I kind of felt like a wet match,” Woodard said. “I kept trying to strike the match and it just wouldn’t last. I made a couple birdies, but it would fizzle and I made a couple of bogeys.”
Top Scores after Round 1:
T1 – Brenda Kuehn, Judy Penman (-2)
3 – Dawn Woodard (-1)
4 – Lea Venable (E)
T5 – Kimbra Benson, Toni Notaro (+1)
It was hot for the first day of autumn, but the competition only heated up for a shotgun start in the second round. The field was stacked: 10 players had competed in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur just a week prior.
Julie Streng of Greensboro, N.C., who shot 76 in the first round, posted the only bogey-free round in the championship in round two. She recorded six birdies evenly distributed between the front and back nine to jump nine spots up the leaderboard into second. Kimbra Benson of Pinehurst, N.C. jumped two spots into third with a 1-under-par performance.
Despite the late challenges, Woodard kept her cool. After a birdie-bogey start, she stayed steady with nine consecutive pars. Starting on hole No. 12, Woodard finally struck the match. On six-straight holes she recorded a three, including two pars, three birdies and an eagle to turn in a 67 and seal a four-stroke victory.
“I had some chances on the front, they just didn’t go,” Woodard said. “You just have to keep giving it chances.”
Final Scoreboard after Round 2:
1 – Dawn Woodard (-6)
2 – Julie Streng (-2)
3 – Kimbra Benson (-1)
4 – Brenda Kuehn (E)
