Stewart Makes Splash at NC Senior Women's Am

SALSIBURY, N.C. (April 30, 2018) -- First round results of the Carolinas Golf Association's 15^th North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, N.C. on Monday, April 30 (Par 36-36--72, 5,488 Yards, Course/Slope Rating 72.1/124).

Following Monday's first round of play at the Country Club of Salisbury, Angela Stewart of Greenville holds a three-stroke lead over Kathy Binkley of Cornelius. Stewart is seeking her first win in the North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship since 2011. Her opening round four-over 76 was a product of managing her game. "It was one of those grinding days with a lot of in-between yardages," said Stewart, who finished runner-up in 2015 and tied for third last year. "I did a good job of committing to each shot."

While searching for her ball on No. 8, Stewart slipped and fell into a creek. Soaked from head to toe - yet uninjured - she sported a slightly embarrassed smile while completing the hole. "It was a great bogey, considering how sopping wet I was," Stewart quipped. Four other bogeys and a birdie on the par-15 15th encapsulated her first round.

Binkley will be looking to notch her first individual CGA title in Tuesday's final round. The Carolinas Women's Four-Ball champion in 2000 was three-over-par thru 15 but played the final three holes in four-over. Her lone birdie came at the 157-yard 9th hole, where she rolled in a 12-foot putt. "I'm not one of the longer knockers off the tee, but my short game held its own today," Binkley said.

Four-time North Carolina Senior Women's winner Patty Moore of Charlotte completes the final pairing. She trails Stewart by four after posting eight-over 80. Defending champion Pat Brogden of Garner will begin the final round trailing by five shots. 

In the Carolinas Division, a 76 from Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown earned a three-shot advantage over Maria Malone of Greensboro. The Carolinas Division plays a shorter course.

The North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and a Carolinas division (shorter course). Players have the option to compete in either division. The champion of the tournament will be named from the Championship Division only. Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday by April 30, 2018, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®.
