102 players arrived at the Cliffs at Keowee Falls for the 39th playing of the Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship and were greeted with lightning quick greens and moist conditions.

Although the day’s forecast was likely to be plagued by poor weather conditions, the first round of the 39th Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship was completed without delay. At the conclusion of play on day one, two teams sit atop the leaderboard in the Championship Division. Maddisen Cox of Easley, S.C., a rising junior at James Madison University, and rising sophomore at East Carolina University Carley Cox of China Grove, N.C. fired an opening round 69 to give them a share of the lead with Gardner-Webb University teammates Taylor Dodson of Aiken, S.C. and Sarah Bertram of Concord, N.C.

After getting off to a rough bogey start on their first hole, Dodson and Bertram proceeded to rattle off five more birdies en route to 69, coupled by one bogey. “We played steady golf today. Sarah started out really strong and I was able to finish our round with a couple of birdies,” said Dodson. The duo says they are playing this event in preparation for their upcoming college golf season. “It was a lot of fun to compete together in a different type of environment. Tomorrow we plan on staying positive and trying to drop a few more birdies.”

The duo of Cox and Cox (no relation) carded six birdies and three bogeys in their opening round 69. They got off to a slow start but quickly picked up the pace. “It took us a few holes to find our rhythm but after No. 5, we did a much better job of picking up each other’s slack. Our games compliment each other well so we are looking forward to that good momentum going into tomorrow.”

In the Senior Division, 18-time CGA champion Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C. and 2015 N.C. Senior Women's champ Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. posted an astonishing 6-under par 66.  The veteran duo converted an impressive eight birdies (most in the field) and two bogeys on their way to 34-32--66. The pair commented that the course was playing a bit longer than in the practice round, so they knew the key was going to be putting. “You can’t take any putt for granted out here,” said Briele. “These greens demand respect.” In addition to respecting the fast green speeds, Briele and Moore said they did a great job of placing the ball today. “We both tried to keep the ball in play and were fortunate that some putts fell early for us. With the exception of two bogeys, we were able to get the ball in the right place to make birdies.”

Final round play will begin Wednesday, August 10th with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by August 9, 2016, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
