Preview: 12th Jimmy Anderson Boys' Invitational

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (May 29, 2020) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 12th Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Junior Invitational at Jacksonville Country Club in Jacksonville, N.C. from June 1 - 2, 2020. (6,600 yards, par 36-36--72)

Players to watch:

• Mason Tucker of Lancaster, S.C. is the defending champion in this event and is currently ranked No. 41 in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. Tucker also was the winner at the 2019 SC Junior Match Play. Tucker is hoping to defend his title this year. 

• Randall Hudson of New Bern, N.C. is the No. 6 golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. Hudson won the TYGA Down East Junior in 2019 and finished in the top-five in eight other tournaments during the 2019 calendar year, including a fourth place finish at the Carolinas Junior Boys. In 2020, he has played in two events, the Carolinas-Georgia Junior and the Dustin Johnson World Qualifying, finishing tied for fifth in the latter. Hudson will begin his collegiate golf career at UNC Greensboro this fall.

• Zach Roberts of Holly Springs, N.C. is currently ranked No. 8 with Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. Roberts placed third at the Carolinas Junior Boys last July and tied for fifth at the NC Junior Boys as well. He had 11 top-20 finishes in 2019. He most recently finished 19th  at the Sea Pines Junior Heritage in February.

• Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. is the No. 10 golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. He has played in three events in 2020, finishing in the top-five in the Carolinas-Georgia Junior as well as the Dustin Johnson World Qualifying. In 2019, DeChellis went on a run of five straight top-10 finishes including the 2019 Jimmy Anderson. DeChellis is committed to play golf at East Carolina University.

• Adam Hunt of Columbia, S.C. is the No. 11 golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and has finished in the top-10 four times out of his last 10 starts. Hunt finished fourth at the 2019 Hope Valley Invitational and tied for sixth at his last start, the 2020 Fort Dorchester Patriot Invitational.

• Todd Moyer of Cornelius, N.C. is the No. 15 golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and has six top-10 finishes in the last year, highlighted by a first-place finish at the TYGA Triad one day event. In his last time out in January, Moyer finished tied for second at the HJGT Pinehurst Junior.

• Zach Adams of Charleston, S.C. has had five top-10 finishes since his tie for sixth at the Beth Daniel Junior in August. With a fourth place finish at the SCJGA Fall Challenge, Adams earned the No. 18 spot in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. 

• Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C. had seven top-20 finishes in 2019 and is currently ranked No. 20 in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. Risner won the TYGA Bojangles Junior Open last June. He also finished third in the Pinehurst North and South Junior in July 2019. Risner will play golf at Elon University this fall.

• Jake Herring of Wilson, N.C. finished tied for fifth at the Carolinas Junior Boys in 2019 and won the NCHSAA-3A East Regional earlier that year. He appeared in the Carolinas-Georgia Junior his last time out in January. The rising senior is committed to play college golf at NC State.

 

This annual junior tournament was started in 2009 by the alumni of the Jacksonville Country Club junior golf program to honor their longtime teacher and friend Mr. Jimmy Anderson. Anderson was the head golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club for over 25 years. Each Saturday morning, he conducted a junior golf clinic to help spread the game of golf to the next generation. During his tenure at Jacksonville Country club, he taught many juniors including Mallory Miller, the 1987 N.C. Junior Champion and numerous future collegiate and golf professionals. Not only did he teach the game of golf, but was always there with a helpful word of encouragement to any young golfer. The tournament began as a boys and girls tournament, but due to the success of the event, the girls have been given their own tournament that is conducted each fall.

The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play.
 

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12 to 18 as of June 1, 2020, who has not started college, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina and has a current USGA Handicap Index® of 15.0 or lower.
