CGA Announces 10th Dogwood State Junior Championship


10th DOGWOOD STATE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT SAPONA RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB IN LEXINGTON, NC - AUGUST 5-7, 2014

WEST END, NC (8/1/14) -- The 10th Dogwood State Junior Championship will be held at Sapona Ridge Country Club in Lexington, NC on August 5-7, 2014.

35 junior girls and 89 exempt junior boys are entered into this year's Championship. The championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. Boys and girls will compete in divisions based on gender. There are no age divisions. Each division will be cut to the low half and ties after 36 holes.

Entry is open to any male or female amateur golfer who has not reached his or her 19th birthday by August 7, 2014, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.

Exempt boys are accepted into the championship at the time of entry. Non-exempt boys gain entry into the championship through sectional qualifying. There is no qualifying stage for girls. The first 45 junior girls to register gain entry into the championship. Sectional qualifying for boys will be held on Monday, August 4th at Crescent Country Club in Salisbury, NC. First tee time is at 8:00am.

Maples’ creative work made Sapona a shotmaker’s delight. Players will think their way through every shot, exactly as the game was intended. Jennifer Chang of Cary, NC and Jonathan Rector of Hendersonville, NC captured their first CGA titles in winning their divisions in the 2013 Dogwood State Junior Championship hosted by River Landing Country Club (River) in Wallace, NC. Neither Chang nor Rector are entered in this year's championship.

Notables in this year's Girls field include 2011 Twin States Junior Girls and 2012 Dogwood State Junior Girls champion Victoria Allred, Pfafftown, NC; 2014 Carolinas Junior Girls runner-up Jessica Kittelberger, Raleigh, NC; Rhea Bhatia, Wake Forest, NC; Annie Collum, Davidson, NC; and Carley Cox, China Grove, NC.

This year's Boys field features 2014 NC Junior Boys' Championship semi-finalist Nicholas Lyerly, Salisbury, NC; qualifying medalist in the 2014 NC Junior Boys' championship Chance Watson, Newland, NC; finishing tied for third in the 2014 Creed Junior Boys' Championship: Walker Simas, Charlotte, NC and Walker Cress, Concord, NC; Patrick Stephenson, Four Oaks, NC; Nolan Mills, Jr., Charlotte, NC, Jubal Early Jr., Charlotte, NC and Trevor Blevins, Kernersville. NC.
