CGA Announces 58th Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship

58th CAROLINAS JUNIOR GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP AT HOPE VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB IN DURHAM, NC - JULY 29-31, 2014

WEST END, NC (7/28/14) -- The 58th Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship will be held at the Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, NC on July 29-31, 2014.

49 players have entered the 2014 Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship.  The Junior Division will be made up of any girl 13 years of age or older regardless of handicap index. Players in the Junior Division will play 18 holes each day. The Sub-Junior Division will be made up of any girl 12 years of age or younger. Players in the Sub-Junior Division play a 9-hole round each day. Players may opt to play in the Junior Division.

The championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. The field will be flighted after round two based on the player's 36-hole score. The Championship flight will be made up of the top 18 players and ties. All other flights will consist of 9 players. The overall champion will be invited to represent  the CGA in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge Junior Girls Team Matches in 2015.
Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has not reached her 19th birthday by July 31, 2014, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.

Hope Valley Country Club is the "total gem" of Donald James Ross (1872 - 1948), golf's most famous and prolific architect. Of the 385 courses designed by Ross, perhaps only at Hope Valley in Durham, North Carolina did he have such a comprehensive role. Even before the citizens organizing the club would accept the real estate developer's offer of a golf course, they insisted Donald Ross see the property and determine if it was suitable for a "high grade golf course and country club." Moreover, Ross designed the course, made on-site inspections during construction, shared in planning its surrounding roads and buffer land, and had a personal acquaintance with the club architect.

In the 2013 Carolinas Junior Girls' championship held at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning, SC, Kelli Murphy of Elgin, SC, played her way through four rounds of match play to capture the championship. Until this year, the championship was conducted at match play after a single round of stroke play to determine seeding for the top 32 qualifiers. Murphy, who also won this championship back in 2011, was the number one seed after shooting 71 in the stroke play qualifying round. By virtue of her victory Murphy went on to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge Junior Girls Team Matches held this past weekend at Olde Mill Resort in Laurel Fork, VA. She and her teammates defeated the Virginias junior girls team by a score of 9-1/2 to 2-1/2 points. Murphy is not entered in this year's tournament.

Notables in this year's strong field include 2012 NC Junior Girls champion Isabella Rusher, Salisbury, NC; 2013 Carolinas Junior Girls semi-finalist Jessica Spicer, Bahamas, NC; 2013 Carolinas Junior Girls quarter-finalist and 2013 SC Junior Girls Match Play finalist Savanah Goodman, Easley, SC; 2011 Twin States Junior Girls and 2012 Dogwood State Junior Girls champion Victoria Allred, Pfafftown, NC; 2014 NC Junior Girls semi-finalists Holly McCann, Raleigh, NC and Alaina Yeatts, Durham, NC; Jessica Kittelberger, Raleigh, NC; Savannah Gowarty, Raleigh, NC; Annie Collum, Davidson, NC; and Sarah Spicer, Bahamas, NC.
