CGA Announces 37th South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship

37th SOUTH CAROLINA JUNIOR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT COUNTRY CLUB OF NEWBERRY IN NEWBERRY, SC - JULY 8-11, 2014

WEST END, NC (7/7/14) -- The Carolinas Golf Association announces the 37th South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at Country Club of Newberry in Newberry, SC on July 8-11, 2014.

103 junior boys and 18 junior girls are entered in this year's championship. Entry is open to any male or female amateur golfer who has not reached their 19th birthday by July 11, 2014, who has not started college, is a legal resident of the South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.

Boys and girls will compete in separate divisions based on gender. There are no age divisions. The championship format is 18 holes of stroke play to determine seedings for match play. The top 64 boys and the top 16 girls from the stroke play qualifier (July 8th) will advance to match play. This is a single elimination format and once a player loses a match, they are eliminated from the tournament.

The Country Club of Newberry was founded in 1922 by a handful of dedicated citizens that were in search of a private facility to call their own for social gatherings, golf, swimming, and eventually tennis. At that time there were only a few other golf facilities in the middle part of South Carolina. Members donated time, labor, and materials to build the original Newberry golf facility and clubhouse. Members also maintained all of the original facilities including the original 9-hole golf course which utilized sand greens that were in effect until 1945. The back nine was completed in 1976 by combined efforts of the membership and management of the Newberry golf course. The basic design has remained intact since. Additional and improved maintenance procedures have added to the playability of this classic design over the years.

Today, the golf facility at the Country Club of Newberry is second to none in the midlands. The playability of the course caters to golfers of all abilities and is sure to test every strength and weakness. Undulating fairways, generous greens, strategic bunkering, and even a little bit of water await to provide a fair analysis of one’s game.

Defending champions from the 2013 South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship are not entered in this year's event. Notable players competing for the boys' championship are: 2014 SC Junior Amateur Champion Jack Parrott, Columbia, SC; runner-up in the 2014 SC Junior Amateur Championship Christian Salzer of Sumter, SC; third place finisher Christian Baliker of Simpsonville, SC; Champion of the Boy's 13-14 Division in the 2014 SC Junior Amateur Championship Harry Reynolds, Greenville, SC; Drew Weary, Bluffton, SC; Trevor Dunn of Columbia, SC; Will Eckstein of Newberry, SC; Will Hicks of Camden, SC; and Will Strickland of Greer, SC.
