CGA Announces 17th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship


WEST END, NC (7/7/14) -- The Carolinas Golf Association announces the 17th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship at Cowans Ford Golf Club in Stanley, NC on July 8-10, 2014.

33 players are entered in this year's championship. Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by July 8, 2014, is a legal resident of the North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.

The championship format is 18 holes of stroke play to determine seeding and flights for match play. Players have the option to compete in either the Championship division or the Tournament division. Championship division will play from the Championship Tees and is comprised of 16 players that will compete for the overall title. Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC is the defending champion and is seeded number one for match play.

Cowan’s Ford offers a championship golf course that is both beautiful and challenging. The layout follows Donald Ross principles by presenting a variety of challenging and fun-to-play shots for all levels of golfers.

The golf course has wide fairways and bent grass greens. Ponds and natural creeks bring water into play on seven holes. The greens are A-4 bent grass and the tees and fairways are hybrid bermuda. Cowan's Ford offers an enjoyable 18 hole championship golf course with 5 teeing ground options. For the long hitters, the "tips" measure 6938 yards. Cowans Ford Golf Club has hosted the Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship for the past 8 years. The venue continues to provide challenging play, great course conditions, and a friendly and helpful staff.

Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC is returning to defend her 2013 Women's Match Play crown. Other notable players in the field include: 8-time CGA champion Pat Brogden of Garner, NC; 7-time CGA champion Debbie Adams of Asheville, NC; recent 2104 Carolinas Women's Amateur Champion Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC; two-time CGA Women's Player of the Year and 2011 and 2012 Carolinas Women's Match Play champion Dawn Woodard of Greer, SC; and Evelyn Dole of Raleigh, NC
