Winston-Salem, N.C. –– The last time the Captain's Putter Matches were contested at Old Town Club in 2007, the Carolinas team dominated the Virginias 32-16. This year, with the teams tied at 12 points heading Saturday's final day of singles matches at Old Town Club, the Carolinas team looked to end the Virginias four year win streak. Two talented teams produced a dramatic final day as the 24-golfer Carolinas team notched a five-point victory (26½-21½) at the 70th Captain’s Putter Matches.

Carolinas reclaimed the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and ended Virginias' four year win streak, which was a first in the history of the event for Virginias.

With the final day's singles pairings being determined by blind draw, the Carolinas team commanded matches both early and late in the lineup. Seven of the first ten matches awarded points to the Carolinas side, as well as six of the final eight.

Over the two days of matches, Carolinas’ seniors rolled-over their opponents by six points (11-5), while Virginias’ regulars held a one-point advantage (15½-16½).

Seven of the Carolinas team members were part of the 2007 matches at Old Town Club. That year, Paul Simson went undefeated, winning each of his three matches. He accomplished that feat again this year, his sixth time earning all of the three points possible. Old Town Club member Russ Perry also won all of his matches this year, the first time he has done so at a Captain's Putter match.

On the final day, Carolinas' competition veterans Scott Harvey, Steve Harwell, Rick Cloninger, Paul Simson, and Walter Todd, Sr. all scored victories. Newcomers Daniel Neveu, Justin Tereshko, and 22-year-old Matt Elliott also registered wins for the Carolinas, with Elliott's point clinching the match. Virginias’ regulars Jordan Utley, Jimmy Delp, Keith Decker, Jon Hurst, Vincent Nadeau, Brandon Grogan and Sam O'Dell all won their singles matches; as well as seniors Jack Allara and Dave Pulk.

Carolinas leads the all-time series 48-21-1.

About the Captain's Putter Team Matches

The matches consist of two days of competition, with opening round four-ball and foursome matches (Friday, Oct. 16), followed by final-day singles matches (Saturday, Oct. 17). A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side.

Last year’s Captain’s Putter matches produced a close final result as the Virginias team notched a one-point victory (24½-23½) at The Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie, VA. Virginias retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and captured its fourth straight victory in the matches, a first in the history of the event for Virginias.

Team Virginias, owner of a one-point advantage following first day four-ball and foursome matches, kept that narrow lead after the two teams split 24 singles’ encounters, 12-12 to claim the one point win. Over the two days of matches, Virginias’ regulars outscored their opponents by four points (18-14), while Carolinas’ seniors held a three-point advantage (9½-6½). The one-point margin of victory was the closest since the event went to a one-point per match format in 2002.
