The number 1 ranked amateur in the Carolinas, Scott Harvey of Kernersville, N.C. did what was expected, take the first round lead in the 102nd Carolinas Amateur Championship. Harvey, 37, carded a bogey-free four-under-par 66 to claim a two stroke advantage. "My ball striking was really good today," said Harvey, who missed just one green in regulation Thursday. "I gave myself a lot of good looks [at birdie]." Interview
Sunny, humid conditions greeted the field of 145 players Thursday morning at the Country Club of Charleston. In the morning wave, only four players posted red numbers on the par-70 layout. Blake McShea of Zebulon, N.C., Chandler Mulkey of Johns Island, S.C., Ford Blanchard, Jr. of Orangeburg, S.C., and Hunter Watkins of Lexington, S.C. shot one-under-par 69. The 499 yard 5th hole is playing as a converted par-4.
As the afternoon wave began play, skies darkened in North Charleston. At 2:21pm, play was suspended nearly two hours for lightning in the area. Even after play resumed, winds gusted at 15-20 mph.
Starting on No. 10, Harvey, who played four holes prior to the delay, made the turn at one-under-par. A birdie on the 11th hole of his round, No. 2 at Country Club of Charleston, then consecutive birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 completed a four-under-par performance. Despite missing putts early in his round, Harvey kept attacking flags. "I just continued to hit good shots and thankfully the putts started rolling in."
In his most recent CGA championship appearance this April, Harvey won the Carolinas Mid-Amateur at Dataw Island Club. The 2011 Carolinas Amateur champion has followed in the footsteps of his late father, Bill, an accomplished amateur golfer who won eight CGA championships, including three Carolinas Amateurs. "This was the tournament he always thought was the biggest and I certainly feel the same way," said Scott, who currently holds seven titles.
Coming off his second North Carolina runner-up finish in as many years, Justin Tereshko of Jamestown, N.C. is chasing his first CGA victory. The 26-year-old golf coach at Guilford College recorded five birdies and three bogeys to post two-under 68. A total of nine players finished their first round at one-under including Eric Bae of Pinehurst, N.C., Reilly Erhardt of Greensboro, N.C., Austin Zoller of Summerville, S.C., and Christian Cichan of Charlotte, N.C.
Three-time defending champion Carter Jenkins of Raleigh, N.C., has since turned professional, playing on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada.
The championship is conducted at 72 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, there will be a cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909. Continue to visit the CGA website throughout this championship and all year long for complete championship coverage including scores, interviews, photos, and recaps.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by July 14, 2016, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.
