Van Paris wins NC Boys' 13 & Under Medalist Award

Pinehurst junior seeded #1 for match play
The primary objective heading into the stroke play portion of the championship was to register a score within the top 16 to qualify for the Championship Bracket. Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst, NC had other ideas. After carding a one-over-par 36 on his first nine Van Paris never thought of playing conservative, instead he let it fly on his last nine. “I wanted to go as low as possible, for my own confidence,” Van Paris said. His aggressive approach led to a two-under-par 33 which gave the rising eighth grader medalist honors and the No. 1 seed going into match play. Walker Isley of Oak Island, NC used a tremendous putting day to shot 72 and nab the No. 2 seed. Four players tied at 75 and seedlings were decided based on a blind draw for those tied.
Van Paris understood the target on his back as the No. 1 seed in match play. “I felt a little bit of pressure, I knew my opponent was a good player so I had to stay focused out there,” Van Paris said. He did just that, capitalizing on solid wedge play throughout the match to advance with a four-and-two victory. “I am excited for tomorrow. I just need to stay hydrated,” Van Paris joked after the match. Nick Rubino of Charlotte, NC pushed the No. 2 seed all the way to the ninth hole but Isley prevailed one-up.
Round two of match play begins Tuesday morning at 8 am off the first tee.
