Stroke Play Qualifying Results

WILSON, N.C. (June 21, 2016) -- Stroke play qualifying results of the 49th North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship hosted by Wilson Country Club in Wilson, NC on Tuesday, June 21st (6774 yards, Par 36-36—72, Rating: 73.0/135).

Tripp Summerlin of Summerfield earned medalist honors
and the No. 2 seed for match play.

The North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship is match play with an 18-hole stroke play qualifier to determine match play seeding. The top 63 boys from the stroke play qualifier advance to match play with defending champion Jack Massei of Cary seeded No. 1.

132 North Carolina junior boys competed Tuesday at Wilson Country Club for 63 match play spots. The 18-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the 49th NC Junior Boys' Championship was played under hot and breezy conditions. 10 competitors broke par Tuesday on the par-72, 6,774 yard layout.

Winning the championship requires a player to qualify for match play then win six matches over a four day span. Perhaps that is why Tripp Summerlin of Summerfield spent the last couple of weeks enjoying life off the golf course. “Honestly I haven’t played that much golf lately," said Summerlin. "I’ve been on the beach and graduating high school.”

That did not seem to matter much once the Appalachian State University commit got his round underway on the tenth hole. A mistake-free inward nine was highlighted by an eagle on No. 12 produced by hitting a hybrid to 8-feet. After making the turn two-under-par, the recent high school graduate used back-to-back birdies to get to four-under. The 3A Boys’ State runner-up manufactured two more birdies on Nos. 4 and 7 before giving one back with a bogey on No. 8 to finish at five-under-par 67.

Michael Childress of Salisbury was in attack mode from the get-go. The rising high school junior started his round with a birdie on No. 1. A three-putt bogey on No. 2 was quickly compensated for with birdies on No. 5 and No. 9 to make the turn two-under-par. Despite not using his driver all day, Childress took advantage of both of the par-5s on the back to get to four-under-par. Another birdie on No. 16 was followed with a bogey on the par-3 17th, but Childress birdied the finishing hole to get himself into a playoff for medalist with Summerlin at five-under 67.

Summerlin holes a 10 foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole
to win medalist honors over Michael Childress.

On the first playoff hole, the 349 yard par-4 tenth, both Childress and Summerlin found the green with their approach shots. Childress missed his downhill thirty footer, giving Summerlin an opportunity to claim medalist honors. Summerlin would make good on his chance, draining an uphill 10-footer for birdie and the No. 2 match play seed.

No playoff was needed to determine the 63 players to make the cut into match play at four-over-par 76. The defending champion, Jack Massei of Cary, will be the No. 1 seed. The 64 players will begin their matches from the 1st and 10th tees starting at 8am Wednesday.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 24, 2016, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter accounts, @cgagolf1909 and @CarolinasJunior. Continue to visit the CGA website throughout this championship and all year long for complete championship coverage including scores, interviews, photos, and recaps.

About Wilson Country Club

Wilson Country Club was opened in May 1915 on the site that is currently known as Willow Springs Country Club. The club grew at a rapid rate following WWII and the size of the membership eventually grew too large for its initial home. Unable to expand the   facilities, the club moved across town to its current site in 1973. Mr. William Byrd designed the new layout that we are so proud of today. Mr. Byrd designed and remodeled over 100 golf courses during his career which panned nearly five decades. His Wilson Country Club design still receives rave reviews for its beauty and overall playability. We have hosted eight Carolinas Golf Association majors: 2010 NC Men’s Amateur, 2009 NCWGA Ladies’ State Amateur, several US Open qualifiers, Web.Com Tour qualifiers, our annual Two Ball Invitational and The Buddy, our annual Pro-Am Invitational.

Wilson Country Club underwent a renovation in 2005 to modernize the course and improve the putting surfaces. The renowned architect Mr. John Lafoy was chosen to do the renovation and work began in May, 2005. John Lafoy has redesigned over 100 golf courses throughout the country and has redesigned many classic layouts, including those of architects A.W. Tillinghast, Alistair Mackenzie, Seth Raynor, Charles Blair MacDonald and numerous Donald Ross designs. The redesign of Wilson Country Club has certainly made it one of the finest golf courses in North Carolina.
