Campbell faces Brock in SC Girls' Match Play Finals

Match play results of the SC Junior Match Play Championship hosted by Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, SC on Thursday, July 21, 2016.

In the first semifinal of the SC Junior Girls' Match Play Championship, Alyssa Campbell of Lake Wylie, S.C. earned her spot in the finals defeating qualifying medalist Anna Freeman of Aiken, S.C. four-and-two. Campbell was down early in the match, two down through four. Campbell battled back and was able to square the match thru 9 holes and took charge on the back nine. Campbell won the par-5, 13th due to a Freeman bogey and proceeded to win the next two holes with back-to-back birdies. After Freeman was unable to convert her birdie try on the par-5, 16th Campbell secured the match four-and-two with a tap in par putt.

Anna Grace Brock of Greenwood, S.C. punched her card to the finals after a hard fought battle with Baylee Evans of Lancaster, S.C. The match was back-and-forth all day, as neither player was ever more than two-up at one given time. Brock made an exceptional par on the par-5, 16th after both players hit it in the hazard off of the tee to take a one-up lead heading to No. 17. After Brock cozied her birdie putt up to gimme range on 17, Evans sank a clutch 15-foot par putt to force the match to the 18th hole. In the end, Evans wasn’t able to convert her birdie putt on the 18th to extend the match and Brock knocked in her four-foot par putt to advance to Friday’s championship match. Brock, a rising high school sophomore, said her “nerves were good all day until No. 16.” Entering the 18th hole dormie Brock said, “I told myself that par is good on this hole and I just concentrated on hitting the green and two putting.” As for tomorrow, Brock plans on keeping it simple. “I’m just going to go out there strike the ball like I did today, hit fairways, hit greens and see what happens.”  Campbell will play Anna Grace Brock in Friday’s finals match at 8:30 am.

After three of the top four seeds lost their first match at the South Carolina Junior Boys' Match Play Championship Thursday’s round of 16 matches and the Quarterfinals were destined to be chaotic. Lower seeds and younger players left as lasting impression on the field as four players are left standing. The No. 33 seed Brady Hinkle of Lancaster, S.C. had an exhausting day that started with a victory on the 19th hole of his round of 16 match over Onterio Jones of Simpsonville, S.C. Hinkle punched his ticket to the semifinals on the 20th hole of his quarterfinal match against Ben Quinque of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Fellow rising junior Zack Gordon of Gaffney, S.C. moved to the quarterfinals after closing out Jack Friedman of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. one-up on the 18th hole. The No. 28 seed will face Hinkle in the semifinals after handling Brandon McBride of Bluffton, S.C. three-and-two in the quarterfinals.

Ryan Marter of Columbia,, S.C. also won his round of 16 match one-up over Matthew Teaster of Spartanburg, S.C. Marter faced Reed Bentley of Wellford, S.C., the qualifying medalist and highest remaining seed. Marter prevailed two-and-one leaving himself, the No. 7 seed, the highest remaining seed and only rising senior left in the championship. Interestingly enough Marter will now face the youngest and lowest remaining seed. Manning Sloop of Rock Hill, S.C. has made an incredible run to the semifinals after a lackluster qualifying round left the rising freshman as the No. 54 seed. However, Sloop has more than proved he belongs after winning two-and-one over Ryan Gettys of Rock Hill, S.C. in the round of 16 and four-and-three over Zachery Lawter Inman, S.C. in the quarterfinals.
