Carolinas Junior Team Wins 31st Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches

CAROLINAS TEAM WINS THE 31st VIRGINIAS-CAROLINAS JUNIOR MATCHES

LYNCHBURG, Va. –– The eight-golfer Carolinas team won six of the eight closing day singles matches to post a five-point victory (10½-5½) against their Virginias counterparts to claim the 31st Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches, which concluded today at Boonsboro Country Club. One point was available per each match.

Due to steady rainfall at the host site, in singles’ encounters, players competed in what still amounted to a scheduled 18-hole match; they played Nos. 1-4, as well as 8-10 and Nos. 17-18 two times. Play was delayed until 12 p.m. EDT when players went off in a shotgun start format.

Carolinas owned a one-point lead (4½-3½) following Saturday’s opening day foursome and four-ball matches. When the cloud cover cleared on Sunday, Carolinas rolled to a 6-2 triumph in singles’ matches to claim its third consecutive victory in the series. Carolinas also registered its second straight win on Virginia soil, having won in 2011 at Boonsboro. The matches alternate between the Lynchburg-based VSGA member club and sites in the Carolinas.

Carolinas won the first four encounters on the board with a trio of North Carolinians showing the way as Eric Bae (Cary, N.C.), Jonathan Rector (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Doc Redman (Raleigh, N.C.) each posted victories as did  Dwight Cauthen Jr. (Columbia, S.C.) who edged Kyle Hart (Midlothian, Va.), 1 up. Bae (2 up), Rector (5 and 4) and Redman (3 and 2) helped to fuel Carolinas’ early momentum. Rector paced Carolinas over the weekend, helping to collect all three available points.

Northern Virginians Connor Messick (Oak Hill, Va.) and Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Va.) registered Virginias’ only two wins on the last day. Messick got past Cole Patterson (Greenville, S.C.), 1 up, while Hildebrand recorded a 2-and-1 win over Will Blalock (Gastonia, N.C.). Hildebrand led Virginias with two and a half points in the matches.

Carolinas owned the final day, however, with Coleman Self (Greenwood, S.C.) defeating Logan Yates (Ruckersville, Va.), 1 up, while Austin Inman (Leland, N.C.) registered a 4-and-3 triumph over Mark Lawrence Jr. (Richmond, Va.) in the last two matches of the day.
