CGA Elects New President at 2014 Annual Meeting


G. Jackson Hughes, Jr. of Greenville, SC Elected 54th President
of the Carolinas Golf Association

WEST END, N.C. – G. Jackson Hughes, Jr. of Greenville, SC was elected 54th president of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) at the association’s annual meeting held on February 1st in Pinehurst, NC.

Jackson succeeds Dr. J. Richard Dosek of Advance, North Carolina, who served a two-year term. Dosek remains a CGA officer as Immediate Past President.

Jackson has been involved with the game of golf for most of his adult life. He played on his college golf team at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC and has competed in many Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA) championships in his playing career. He was co-medalist at the 2004 U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier in Fort Worth, Texas and participated in that year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship conducted at Sea Island, GA. Jackson is president of Hughes Commercial Properties, Inc, a Real Estate Development firm doing business across the southeast. He is married to Velda Hughes and has two sons, Jackson III and Harrison, and a daughter, Anne Hughes McNabb.

Lawrence Hicks of Greensboro, NC was elected vice-president for a two-year term while Gene Spencer of Columbia, SC and Dan O’Connell of Spartanburg, SC were elected to one-year terms as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.

Randy Allen of Myrtle Beach, SC, Frank Golden of Charlotte, NC and Greg Norris of Wilmington, NC were re-elected to new four-year terms on the executive committee. Former CGA president Walter Todd of Laurens, SC was elected to serve out the remaining term of Executive Committee member Spencer.

The CGA Executive Committee is comprised of 19 members, six members from North Carolina, six from South Carolina and seven officers, including the executive director, who serve as ex officio members on the committee.

In other action, the CGA Executive Committee agreed to fund, through the Carolinas Golf Foundation (GCF), $70,500 for 2014 projects. The CGA administers the Carolinas Golf Foundation and approves CGF activities in support of junior golf, women’s golf, turfgrass research, and many other worthwhile Carolinas “grow the game” projects.

Greg Norris, chairman of the Tournament Site Committee announced the CGA will conduct 242 events in 2014. Highlights of the 2014 calendar include the 100th Carolinas Amateur Championship to be held at Greenville Country Club (Chanticleer course), Greenville, SC; the 88th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Wachesaw Plantation Club, Murrells Inlet, SC; the 53rd Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship at Sedgefield Country Club (Dye Course), Greensboro, NC; the 16th Carolinas Women’s Senior Amateur Championship held at Governors Club (Lakes-Foothills), Chapel Hill, NC; the 65th Carolinas Junior Boys Championship at Camden Country Club, Camden, SC; and the 58th Carolinas Junior Girls Match Play Championship at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, NC.
