THE COUNTRY CLUB OF NORTH CAROLINA (CARDINAL COURSE) TO HOST 20th TAR HEEL CUP MATCHES, MARCH 24-25, 2014

WEST END, NC - A team of eight North Carolina amateurs will be chasing their 3rd victory in a row when they go against eight North Carolina PGA professionals in the 20th Tar Heel Cup Matches at The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, NC on March 24 and 25. While the amateurs have won the previous two Cup Matches (2012 and 2013), the professionals have long dominated this event with a 14-4-1 all-time record.

The amateurs, who retained the title after last year's 7-5 win in this Ryder Cup-style competition at The Country of North Carolina, now stand at 2-0-2 over the past four years. They are looking to extend their win streak this year with 5 veteran players returning to the competition. This is the second year in a row that the matches, which are jointly conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Carolinas PGA Section, have been played on the Cardinal Course at The Country Club of North Carolina.

The Tar Heel Cup format consists of one day of Four-Ball matches and one day of Singles matches with one point awarded to the winner of each match. It requires 6 1/2 points to win the Cup. Until 2009, scoring was based on the Nassau system with three points at stake in each match -- one point for winning the front nine, one point for winning the back nine and one point for winning the overall 18.

The Country Club of North Carolina lies on 2000 acres of land which includes three lakes (the largest, Lake Watson, is sixty acres) and two eighteen-hole golf courses of world-class caliber. It is home to the Dogwood Course and the Cardinal Course. Both the Dogwood Course and the Cardinal Course went under renovations in 1999 and 2001, respectively. The practice facility went under renovation in 2006. Both courses are currently ranked in the top 15 courses in North Carolina.
