Semifinal Matches Set at the 17th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship

Stanley, NC – First and second round match play results of the 17th Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship hosted by Cowans Ford Golf Club on Wednesday, July 9, 2014.  Par 36-36—72  5984 yards.

Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC continues her winning streak and knocks out both her opponents by a 7 and 6 margin.  Kirk first faced off against Kathy DeVore of High Point, NC in her early morning match but a hot putter and laser like shots to almost every flagstick put her ahead early in both her matches and Kirk never looked back.  “I just feel pretty good about my swing right now. Anything can happen in match play but I’m feeling pretty confident and comfortable with my game,” Kirk said.  Kirk was the 2013 runner-up and is hoping to redeem herself and earn her second CGA title this year.

Katie (Kirk) will face off against Rachel Moore of Lexington, SC.  Moore first defeated Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, NC 1 up in her morning match and would then go on to defeat Julie Streng of Greensboro, NC by 3 and 1.  “Every year I seem to move further up in the bracket,” Moore laughed.  “I hope I can continue my solid play for two more rounds.”

These semifinals will also include two more past CGA champions who are no stranger to winning in match play situations.  Pat Brogden of Garner, NC is a past Carolinas Women’s Match Play Champion and is hoping to prevail at the end of the week.  “There is still some game left in this old lady,” Brogden chuckled.  Brogden knocked out defending champion Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC by 4 and 3 and earlier in the day was able to hang to defeat past champion Dawn Woodard of Greer, SC.  “I think I had four birdies this afternoon.  I can really see the line on these greens,” Brogden added.

Brogden, 60, will face off against Mallory Hetzel of Waynesville, NC.  Hetzel holds a Carolinas Junior Girls Match Play Championship crown in her trophy case and thrives on match play formats.  Hetzel, the head women’s golf coach at Western Carolina University, had to face off against one of her own players in her first round match.  She would go on to defeat Ashley Thompson of Clyde, NC 1 up.  “That was a little difficult when I saw the pairing but we had a good match.”  Hetzel would then make her way into the semis by defeating Danielle Haizlip of Statesville, NC 6 and 4.
