Fobes earns medalist honors at NC Jr Girls

Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. advances to the Round of 16 after earning No. 1 seed position and medalist honors on June 13, 2018 at the 22nd North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 13, 2018) -- Second round of stroke play qualifying and Round of 32 match play results of the 22nd North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 (6,040 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 75.1/135).

It's her home course, and Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. is determined to make her mark. She carded a tournament-low 70 in the second round of stroke play qualifying, which earned her medalist honors and the No. 1 seed in match play at the 22nd North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship hosted by Maple Chase Golf and Country Club.

Her second qualifying round was much improved over her first round. She made four birdies on the front nine of play and stayed steady on the back to finish at two-under-par. She carried the momentum to her Round of 32 match and defeated No. 32 seed Becca Connolly of Winston-Salem, N.C, 7&6. Fobes was four-under-par when her match ended on No. 12.

"I was most happy with my putting today," Fobes said. "I made a lot of birdie putts that weren't really make-able, and my caddie was great. It definitely exceeds my expectations that I had for this course."

Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. birdied the final hole in her qualifying round to finish at three-over-par 75 for the day and claim the No. 2 seed. Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, N.C. claimed the No. 3 seed after finishing with a two-day total of 151. Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. also jumped up the leader board after making an eagle on her final hole. She holed out from the fairway on No. 18 which secured her position as the No. 4 seed.

Most of the higher seeds rolled through the Round of 32 matches and played their best rounds of the tournaments. Sasha Hayes of Winston-Salem, N.C. cruised through her first match and won 8&7 over No. 28 seed Haylie Paulin of Winston-Salem, N.C. No. 2 seed Alexis Sudjianto made three birdies and defeated No. 31 seed Elizabeth Ritchie, 7&5. No. 3 seed Muskan Uppal earned a 5&3 victory, defeating No. 30 seed Ainslee Conrad of Lexington, N.C. No. 4 seed Emily Hawkins will advance to the Round of 16 after a 5&4 win over No. 29 seed Grace Holcomb of Wilmington, N.C.

"I felt like I got to have a second chance on a lot of the holes that I didn't do as well on in stroke play," Sudjianto said. "Since this was my first match play win, and I won by a larger margin than I thought I would, it definitely is helping my confidence a lot, and I'm excited for the next two days."

The Round of 16 matches will be held Thursday morning and play will continue Thursday afternoon with quarterfinal matches. The semifinal and championship matches will be held on Friday, June 15.

 

The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play. Top 32 in stroke play qualifying advance to match play.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer ages 12 to 18 as of June 15, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club. Entries are subject to rejection at any time, including during the event, by the CGA or the host club.
