The Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches of the 22nd North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship took place under blue skies at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. In a day full of play, No. 1 seed Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. survived back-to-back close matches to advance to tomorrow's semifinal match.

In her Round of 16 match, Fobes played a marathon match, but eventually outlasted No. 17 seed Bailee Twiford of Coinjock, N.C. in 21 holes. She sank a 40-foot birdie putt to advance to the quarterfinals.

"The first match really gave me a run for my money," Fobes said. "I almost gave it away. I was two-up, and then she won two, and we were just going back and forth there for awhile. It was tough."

Another close match in the afternoon, Fobes outlasted No. 8 seed Anna McDonald to punch her ticket to Friday morning's semifinal match after making another clutch birdie putt on her last hole. The University of North Carolina-Wilmington commit carded a 2 and 1 victory to advance to the semifinals and work to hoist the trophy at her home course. But for now, she's just enjoying this victory.

"Being in the semifinals is definitely further than I thought I would get," Fobes said. "Last year, I lost in my first match, so this is amazing."

All four of the top seeds are moving on to the semifinals. Fobes will face No. 4 seed Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. in tomorrow's semifinal match. Hawkins had an impressive day, earning a 5 and 3 victory over Caroline Crumrine of Wilmington, N.C. in the Round of 16. In her quarterfinal match, she faced No. 5 seed and 2017 Dogwood Girls' champion Sasha Hayes of Winston-Salem, who had an impressive run in match play during the tournament. Hawkins held onto a steady lead and defeated Hayes 4 and 2.

The other semifinal match will also be a battle of the top seeds. No. 2 seed Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. carded consecutive impressive rounds, defeating Ana Tsiros of Asheville, N.C. in the Round of 16, 7 and 5. Sudjianto holed out from the fairway on the Par-5 6th for double eagle en route to defeating her quarterfinal opponent Macie Burcham of Greensboro, N.C., 7 and 6. She will face No. 3 seed Muskan Uppal, who earned a spot in the semifinals after a tight afternoon match with No. 11 seed Lotte Fox.

The semifinal matches will be held Friday morning and play will continue Friday afternoon with the championship match.

The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play. Top 32 in stroke play qualifying advance to match play.
