Ownbey leads after suspended N.C. Match Play

Carson Ownbey shot back-to-back 66's to finish at eight-under-par in stroke play qualifying.

GASTONIA, N.C. (August 2, 2018) -- Second round stroke play qualifying results of the 9th North Carolina Match Play Championship at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. on Thursday, August 2 (6,995 yards, Par 35-35-70).

Carson Ownbey of Candler, N.C. finished with his second straight 66 on day two of stroke play qualifying to finish at eight-under-par 132 and sit at the top of the leaderboard. Alex Goff of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Nick Lyerly of Salisbury, N.C. finished tied for second at six-under-par 134. Stroke play qualifying did not finish after a suspension of play in the afternoon.

Through the first 35 holes of competition, Ownbey totaled nine birdies and no bogeys, but on No. 18 he was left with a three foot putt that he had to wait to finish until after a rain delay. Ownbey would go on to burn the edge of the cup and settle for a bogey. Despite the disappointing finish, Ownbey still feels good about his chances in match play.

"When it comes to match play, if you don't make bogeys then you don't lose a lot of holes," said Ownbey.

Ownbey was able to hit 31 of 36 greens in the stroke play qualifying, and he said that, combined with the putter catching fire on the back nine today, was the key to his success.

Ownbey will likely take the No. 1 seed headed into the match play tournament and he isn't taking it lightly.

"It gives me a lot of momentum," said the incoming freshman at UNC Charlotte, "I look forward to playing whoever I play, but it definitely helps out to be the number one seed."

Play was suspended at 2:00 p.m. for lightning in the area, and then again at 5:30 p.m. The second delay resulted in play being suspended until tomorrow, when the stroke play qualifying will restart at 9:00 a.m. First round matches are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

The North Carolina Match Play Championship is conducted as 36 holes of stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for match play.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by August 1, 2018, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4. Entries are subject to rejection at any time, including during the event, by the CGA or the host club. The reason for rejection may include unbecoming conduct or cell phone use during a stipulated round. All players must conform to the “USGA Rules of Amateur Status” as specified in “The Rules of Golf”. College Student Eligibility: A college student is considered a resident of their parent(s)/guardian(s) “Legal Residency Criteria” as stated in the CGA Tournament Manual unless said student (a) has no dependency on his/her parents; and (b) lives full time in North Carolina. About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
