It is never over until the last ball falls. Higher seeds brought their competitive best in the Round of 16 matches as most of them came out on top against their opponents. In the first match out this morning, No. 6 seed Haeley Wotnosky of Wake Forest, N.C. defeated medalist and No. 1 seed Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C.

“It feels good,” said Wotnosky. “I played my game today and stuck to my plan for the course. I had a bigger picture on what the course was offering for the day.”

After a challenging stroke-play round, No. 23 seed Madison Moosa of Charlotte, N.C. defeated No. 7 seed Anna Freeman of Aiken, S.C., 3-and-2.

The No. 13 seed Carly Burkhardt of Greenville, N.C., a rising junior at Furman University, defeated the No. 4 seed Kathleen Sumner of Charleston, S.C.

Quaterfinal matches began in the afternoon and brought some exciting action to the tournament. North Carolina Junior Girls’ Champion and the reigning Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year, Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. faced the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion and No.1 ranked women’s amateur in the Carolinas, Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C. The duo battled throughout their front nine and were tied at the turn. Schuster won the first two holes on their back nine to go 2-up, but Spicer fought hard, winning their 13th and 16 holes to tie the match once again. A wayward shot on the last hole of the match and Schuster’s two-putt par sends her to the Semifinals.

“I’m happy and proud of myself,” said Schuster. “My putting was pretty good. There were a lot of good saves. Everything was solid. Staying in the moment was the most important part for me.”

Wotnosky, who knocked off No. 1 seed Hawkins in the morning session defeated Sophia Burnett of Bluffton, S.C., 3-and-2 to advance to the Semifinal matches. Wotnosky will face Greenville, S.C. resident Victoria Huskey, who defeated Carly Burkhardt 1-up in the Quarterfinals.

Riley Smyth of Cary, N.C. got behind in both her Round of 16 and Quarterfinal matches, but managed to overcome in both to claim the final spot in the Semifinals. Smyth will face Schuster in her Semifinal match on Thursday morning.

Semifinal matches begin Thursday morning followed by the final championship match on Thursday afternoon.
