Victoria Huskey of Greenville, S.C. captures her first CGA Championship in her hometown at the 22nd Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship.

Semifinal Matches

When the Semifinal matches began this morning, Huskey faced off against Haeley Wotnosky of Wake Forest, N.C. Huskey played her first three holes of the day at two-under-par and took a 3-up lead early in the match.

A birdie by Wotnosky brought the match back to within two but Huskey took a substantial lead at the turn by winning the final two holes on the front nine to make the turn, 4 up. Huskey went on to win Nos. 11 and 12 to go 6 up with six holes to play. Huskey booked her ticket to the finals with a halve on No. 13, winning 6 and 5.

“It felt pretty good. I knew that match was going to be a big one, especially since she is a tough competitor but I made a couple birdies and just got it rolling nice,” said Huskey.

In the other Semifinal match, Riley Smyth of Cary, N.C. faced off against the reigning Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year, Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Smyth got off to a rough start after being down two after the fifth hole. A par to win No. 6 followed by ties throughout the rest of the front nine moved Schuster to only 1 up.

Smyth made the turn with a new mindset, making birdies on Nos. 10 and 11. Schuster brought the match back to all square after winning No. 12. The match went all the way to the 18th green where Smyth made a 15-foot putt to win 2 up and advanced to the finals.

Championship Match

With birdies on the first two holes of the championship match, Smyth took an early 2-up lead over Huskey.

“Starting off, Riley made two birdies on one and two so I was two down but I knew this was gonna be a really good match so I tried to keep myself in it,” said Huskey.

Huskey rebounded quickly and made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to make the turn all square. Huskey rode that momentum into the back nine, making birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 to find herself with a 2-up lead. Smyth was two down with two holes to play but was able to keep the match alive with a birdie on No. 17. She found herself with a birdie putt on No. 18 green to extend the match but a two-putt par again left Smyth one spot shy of that first CGA victory. Smyth finished in second place at the Carolinas Women’s Amateur earlier this summer.

Huskey, a rising-senior at the College of Charleston and a native of Greenville, S.C. was able to capture her first CGA Championship title in one of the hardest-to-win amateur golf events in the Carolinas.

“It feels awesome,” said Huskey. “I haven’t won in a while. I’ve come in second a lot so to finally get this one under my belt feels amazing. It gives me confidence moving forward for the rest of the season.”

Our 2017 Carolinas Women’s Match Play Champion, Hailey Cleary of Lexington, S.C., was able to take down the First Flight Bracket with a win on the 19th hole against Hannah Rose Bruxvoort of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Mackenzie Battle of Charleston, S.C. defeated Julie Streng of Greensboro, N.C., 2 and 1 to win the Second Flight Bracket.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the club members and staff of Furman University Golf Club for hosting this event. The tournament would not be possible without their dedication and hard work.
