Poole in Position to Defend Dogwood Title

DAVIDSON, N.C. (July 31, 2019) -- Round 2 results of the 15th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C. on Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

2018 Dogwood Junior Boys Champion, Kenan Poole of Raleigh, N.C. jumped to the top of the leaderboard after a round two score of six-under-par, 66. Poole’s bogey-free round got some momentum quickly as he made two four-foot putts on the second and third hole for his first back-to-back birdies of the day.
“I was two-under through three. I missed a couple putts early on but I was playing really steady” said Poole.
A few consistent pars from the fourth to the sixth hole brought him to his second back-to-back birdies of the day on the 7th and 8th hole to make the turn at four-under-par, 32. Poole opened the back nine with a long train of pars until his final two holes for his third back-to-back birdies of his round.
Poole is no stranger to this tournament or the leaderboard and understands the strategy it takes to play well at River Run Country Club.
“The rough is really thick. Tee shots are crucial. There are a lot of slopes and undulations that can make your ball move one way or the other so you’ve got to pick your spots” said Poole. Poole will have a four stroke lead going into the final round.
Ike Joy of Denver, N.C. sits in second position with a two day total of one-under par, 143. Joy had two bogeys on his front nine and one on the back nine, but throughout his round was able to recover from his challenges with a total of four birdies for the day.
Nicholas Matthews of Mebane, N.C. and Austin Brooks of Charlotte, N.C. are tied for third position at even-par, 144.
The field has been cut to 70 players for the final round. Round three will begin at 8am Thursday morning followed by awards in the afternoon.
