Morgan Makes Comeback to Win Carolinas Women's Amateur

 

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. (June 4, 2020) -- The final results of the 94th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, N.C. from June 2 - 4, 2020. Championship Division (6,241 yards, par 36-36--72) Carolinas Division (5,125 yards, par 36-36--72).

Anna Morgan of Spartanburg, S.C. captured her first CGA championship title at the 94th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship with a 3-over-par, 219 total. In the final round, Morgan shot 4-under-par, 68.

 

“I was just so excited to be able to play this week with everything that has been going on, I wasn’t sure that there would be many tournaments this summer. So just getting to play is super exciting, and then getting the win in my first tournament back in a couple of months feels really good,” Morgan said. 

 

Even though Morgan sank five putts for birdie, she felt her strength today was off the tee. 

 

“I was crushing my driver today which is always good. That’s my favorite club in my bag,” Morgan said. “I was playing pretty solid, making a lot of pars, and then on the back nine, I caught a hot streak. I hit it pretty close, made a couple of putts and ended up finishing strong.”

 

Throughout the round, the Furman University rising sophomore did not know where she stood on the leaderboard. During the final stretch on the back nine, Brenda Corrie Kuehn (a two-time Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion and Rachel Kuehn’s mom) told the group that they should try to make a few birdies on the final stretch. Morgan replied that she would love to, and that’s exactly what she did. Morgan finished with three birdies on the last four holes, and her birdie putt on No. 17 just barely lipped out. She carded 5 birdies and just one bogey all day.

 

Duke University standout Gina Kim of Durham, N.C. and Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. finished tied for runner-up at 5-over-par, 221 total. Kim made a push in the final round, carding four birdies on her way to shooting a 69, the second lowest round of the day. Ketchum had another steady round and fought to keep the lead on her finishing holes, but Morgan’s final stretch was too much to overcome.

 

Wake Forest University’s Rachel Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. and future University of North Carolina Tar Heel Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, N.C. finished fourth and fifth respectively with a 6-over-par, 222 total and 8-over-par, 224 total.

 

The final round provided an exciting finish with some of the top-ranked college players in the country and some of the best juniors in the Carolinas. In all, over 30 colleges and universities were represented this year at the Carolinas Women’s Amateur. 

 

In the Carolinas Division, Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. earned the low senior honor with a 12-over-par, 228 total. Prescott finished with the low score of the tournament and the only sub-par round in the Carolinas Division all week with a 1-under-par, 71 in the final round. 2007 Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. earned the low super senior honor for her second year in a row.

The Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship was inherited by the Carolinas Golf Association from the Carolinas Women's Golf Association in 2013. The championship began in 1922 and annually crowns the women's amateur champion of the Carolinas.

 

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and Carolinas division (shorter course).

 

This competition includes gross scores only for the Championship division and gross and net scores for the Carolinas division. Players in the championship division are flighted using 36-hole scores. Players in the Carolinas division are pre-flighted within their division by Handicap Index®.

 

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors.
