Pake June of Florence, S.C. and Nolan Hawkins of Hilton Head Island, S.C. both carded impressive two-under-par, 70’s to tie for the lead in the Boys’ Division. June and Hawkins are co-medalists. After a random draw of ties, Hawkins is the No. 1 seed and June is the No. 2 seed going into match play.

Hawkins played a round full of ups and downs with four birdies in a row on the front nine, matched by three bogeys on the back. However he topped off the round with one extra birdie on No. 18 to seal his position as co-medalist.

June took a different approach planning to have a steady climb to the top. “I just played really smart golf today. I wasn’t focusing on making too many birdies, I was just focusing on making sure I didn’t mess up. As long as I didn’t make many mistakes then I knew I wouldn’t shoot too high,” June said. “There were a lot of shots to the middle of the green and a lot of putts that fell, so I am feeling good.”

While their scorecards may look very different, the outcome was the same by the time they reached the scoring table. Hawkins and June both plan to take it one stroke at a time and one match at a time trying to make it to the Final Match.

Zach Adams of Charleston, S.C., Oliver Rotermund of Charleston, S.C, Simon Wright of Lancaster S.C., Jonathan Brennan of Taylors S.C. and Cheney Connell of Blythewood, S.C.  all tied for second place just one stroke off of the leaders for one-under-par, 71’s.

In the Girls’ Division, Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet came in at four-under-par, 68. Anderson started her day with back to back birdies on the first two holes and ended with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 as well.

“My putter and approach shots were working. I was sticking them pretty close to the hole and just making some putts,” Anderson said.

This is Anderson’s first match play tournament and she is looking forward to starting it as the No. 1 seed. “I’m really excited, because I’ve never done it before so I think it’ll be fun. I’m just going to keep focusing on playing my own game,” Anderson said.

Mia Gray of Conway, S.C., finished just one shot off the lead with a 3-under-par, 69 claiming the No. 2 seed in match play. Gray had a strong front nine with four birdies, and a solid back nine playing even par golf. She was hitting her irons close, and sinking putts all day long.

Alexia Siehl of Fort Mill, S.C. came in third at two-over-par, 74. Siehl bounced back from a double on No. 16 with a birdie on No. 17. Just one stroke behind her is Kayleigh Reinke of Rock Hill S.C. who finished at three-over-par, 75. Sydney Roberts of Chesnee S.C. claimed solo fifth with a four-over-par, 76 finish.

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions will be seeded based on their scores in today’s Stroke Play Qualifying and the Boys’ Round of 64 and Girls’ Round of 16 matches will be decided based on those seeds.
