Brian and Justin Westveer of Charlotte, N.C. took home the 54th Carolinas Father-Son Championship with a 6-under-par, 66 on Friday at Longleaf Golf & Family Club. The duo made seven birdies, including four as a part of a bogey-free back nine, to come out on top.

Harrison and Jacob Rutter of Winston-Salem, N.C. finished one shot off of the lead at 5-under par, while Ashley and Gary Hull of Statesville, N.C., Fulton and Xan Smith of Pinehurst, N.C., and Walt and Walter Todd of Laurens and Greenville, S.C. all tied for third at 4-under-par.

“It’s awesome being able to play with my dad,” Justin said. “We play almost every day that we can, so it feels good to come out and play in tournament conditions with him to watch him grind.”

Brian and Justin actually finished runner-up in this event just a few years ago, making bogey on the final hole to lose to the Todds, so after the round, they said that this win felt even more special given their past finishes.

“My dad’s short game was the best thing about our team today,” Justin said. “We were able to put ourselves in great positions off the tee, and he was able to capitalize and give us a lot of good looks at birdie.”

“It’s not hard to play from 40 yards off the green,” Brian joked. “Justin can just bomb it. Luckily, I’d hit it to 4 or 5 feet, and he’d make the putts. I’m glad I wasn’t the one putting them.”

Brian and Justin will be back at it again next week, this time competing for the 69th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club.
