Garrett Risner of Holly Springs, N.C. seized the lead for Round One of the 16th Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship with a strong 6-under-par, 66. Risner, the No. 8 ranked player in the N.C. Junior Boys’ Rankings, certainly proved his game with a day of consistent tee shots, and precise putting. Risner had seven birdies in his round, including three in a row on Nos. 10-12.

“I’m pretty happy with how I played. I played like I usually do, I just made a few more putts and it just felt good,” Risner said.

The rising Elon University freshman said that his putting was the key to his round today.

“My putter was definitely working for me, and I just tried to hit my irons close which helped because it gave me lots of opportunities,” Risner said.

Despite the 95 degree heat index, Risner pushed through and continued to play smart, consistent golf.

“Going into tomorrow I’m just going to continue to play well and play smart,” Risner said.

Risner leads Matias La Grutta, of Cary, N.C. by three shots. La Grutta, the 57th ranked player in the country noted that despite the heat, he just tried to keep making pars. “Tomorrow I will just be aggressive and make the most of every shot out there,” La Grutta said.

One shot behind La Grutta with a score of 3-under-par, 69, Matthew Richardson of Ayden, N.C. and Jake Clayton of Burlington, N.C. are still in the hunt for the championship.

Richardson explained that his iron and wedge game were decent, but all his birdies came from putts that were outside of 10 feet.

Richardson’s stand out hole of the day was No. 11 where his momentum for the back nine picked up. Richardson hit an iron shot to 15 feet and sank the putt for birdie. He then proceeded to birdie holes Nos. 12, 13 and 14.

“All over I just had a solid round,” Richardson said. “I’ll just focus on my game tomorrow and not worry about anyone else.”
