Bob Edens of Moncks Corner, S.C. and Steve Horton of Columbia, S.C. have taken a two-stroke lead over the field today after an impressive 9-under-par, 63 opening round.

Horton carded five birdies and an eagle on his own ball today. That paired with Edens’ three birdies pushed their side to the top of the leaderboard. Horton said, “We just made everything today.”
Despite this being their first four-ball event together, Edens and Horton were able to play to each other’s strength and sink many important putts.

“My ball striking could be a little better. I was struggling with that, but we made putts,” said Edens. “We read them well. In our practice round we didn’t, but we got out here today and just figured it out.”

Two-time Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Champions, Don Detweiler and Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. have taken second position at 7-under-par, 65 in the opening round. Detweiler and Simson are especially motivated this week as Detweiler would win his tenth CGA Championship with Simson by his side if they take home this title.

“It means everything to play together (with Detweiler),” Simson said. “You never know when the next one is going to come or which one is going to be the last one you might win. So it just means everything.”

There is a three-way tie for third at 6-under-par, 66. Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. and Doug Owens of Albemarle, N.C., Dennis Helms and Mike Judkins of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and David Loveland and Steve Passen of Etowah, N.C. are all just three shots off of the lead heading into the final round tomorrow.

Jerry Hartsell of Matthews, N.C. and Vardaman Banks of Midland, N.C. have taken the 70+ Division lead after a 6-under-par, 66 on the day. 2017 Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball runner-ups Robert Desjardins of Matthews, N.C. and William Boles of Wilson, N.C. are just two strokes shy of the lead at 4-under-par, 68.

The 9th Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship will resume tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. and the leaders will tee off for the final round at 11:12 a.m. The field is playing the Independent and Vintage course routing at Mount Vintage Golf Club.
