First time playing partners Matthew Crenshaw and Wade Boteler of Alamance Country Club captured the 44th Carolinas Club Championship with an outstanding 8-under-par, 63 finish.

Crenshaw and Boteler started the shotgun start on No. 2. They set the tone for their round with a birdie right off the bat on the 379 yard, par-4. The duo followed this with a train of birdies until a momentum shift on No. 8.

“What did it for me was No. 8,” said Boteler. “Matt (Crenshaw) was playing really well on the front and I was playing alright. Then on No. 8 I sank a long putt for birdie that got it going and was pretty significant for me today.”

The birdie on No. 8 lit a spark in Crenshaw and Boteler and they went on to birdie Nos. 9, 11, 13, 14, 17 and 18. “I hit a good 5-iron to seven or eight feet on No. 18 for a great birdie,” said Boteler. “That was playing about 205 yards so I was happy to finish off with that.”

This is Boteler’s first CGA Championship title and Crenshaw is now a seven-time CGA Champion. Crenshaw won this event with Adam McLaughlin in 2012 for Alamance Country Club. However this win makes three Carolinas Club Championships for Alamance Country Club as they also took home title in 2007 with McLaughlin and Richard Hogan representing their club.

Narrowly missing a playoff by just one stroke, three sides tied for runner-up at The Club at Irish Creek. Marias Lombard and David Boyce of Raintree Country Club, Stephen Lavenets and Cutler Harris of FSC Golf Club, and Andy Zachowicz and Dennis Long of Statesville Country Club all carded 7-under-par, 64 to tie for second.

Bradon Dembowiak and Preston Dembowiak of Sedgefield Country Club and Jim Brotherton and Scott Newton of High Point Country Club tied for fifth just two strokes off the lead at 6-under-par, 65. Notably, the side representing High Point Country Club played a bogey-free round.

The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of the Club at Irish Creek, including General Manager Alan Cress, Head Golf Professional Jeremy Hurst and Course Superintendent Artie Helton, for their hospitality in hosting the 44th Carolinas Club Championship.
