Coming into the final round five shots back, Alicia Fang of Waxhaw, N.C. did not know if she could win the 15th Carolinas Junior Girls’ 15 and Under Championship. However, one thing was certain; she was going to give it her best shot.

“Even though I felt like I was out of the running after my first round,” said Fang. “I still wanted to play well to try and give myself a chance. I kept telling myself to keep trying, not give up and just do the best I can today.”

After an impressive 38 on the front nine, Fang kept pushing as she made the turn, birdieing back-to-back holes on Nos. 11 and 12.

“That was definitely a turning point for me,” said Fang. “It gave me the confidence to keep going and finish the round strong.”

That never-give-up mindset paid off for Fang in the long run as she shot a 1-over-par, 73 to win her first CGA championship.

The Country Club of Whispering Pines certainly provided the players with a unique challenge, and it came down to the final hole to determine the champion. At the end of it all, a first time CGA winner was triumphant.

“It feels great to be a CGA champion,” said Fang, “I’m honored to have been able to play against all these amazing golfers. It was really fun competing.”

Fang finished the tournament at 11-over-par, 155, just one stroke ahead of Rachel Joyce of Southern Pines, N.C., who also shot a tournament-low 73 in the final round. Claire Green of Okatie, S.C. finished in solo third at 13-over-par, 157 and was the only player in the field to break 80 in both rounds.

11 year-old, Natalia Henderson of Southern Pines, N.C. won the junior division with a score of 23-over-par, 167 through 36 holes. Audrey Liu of Weddington, N.C. finished just one stroke back to earn runner-up. Jewel Gilchrist López came in solo third at 35-over-par, 179 overall.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend our appreciation to the members and staff at the Country Club of Whispering Pines, especially General Manager Eric Morgan, Events Director Deanna Barefoot and Course Superintendent Mike Rose.
